Its pretty neat to watch them this time of year. they are in little herds 3-4 running around chasing each other. They are varmits here season all year and no limits. They can mess up the drip systems in the orchards buy chewing on the lines.

If it was not for rabbits I would never get a buck.

Roy,

I don't know the California rules but in Idaho, we can kill jack rabbits year round - no season, no limits.  They are considered varmints and are very prolific.  Like other hares or rabbits, populations are cyclical with highs and lows.

In years past, there were so many, big round ups occurred with drivers pushing them into pens to be clubbed by the those waiting.  They can do a lot of damage to vegetation - natural and crop lands. [/b]
I just finished a book detailing the Dust Bowl in the 30's. It specifically talked about rabbit drives. Don't quote me, but if I recall correctly, they killed something like 6000 in one weekend.

Check out this link. Says 10,000 to 20,000 in Kansas in 1935.

Nice! I never thought about calling them. We have a bunch out here, and they are pretty tough to get close to.

California jack rabbits are open all year. No limit.
Gonna give calling them a try. Wasn't aware they went into rut. Makes sense. Thanks for the pics and tips.
Cheers
