Anyone ever do their own checkering on their risers  (pics) ...Lloyd

Hi Lloyd,
I was real close to it once. I have the tools and had been practicing. Then I saw a bow with stippling on it. I went that direction instead...a lot easier. But I still want to try some checkering.

Snag,

What is the difference in feel between stippling and checkering?

Raging Water

I believe this is Checkering:

And this is Stippling:

I think the checkering, if done right (i.e. not too deep and not too shallow) is a little better for holding your hand in place. But the stippling I did has proven to work fine. I think some just do the stippling or the checkering too deep.
Nice work there RagingWater on the stippling!

The Checkering was done by Howard Hill Archery and the Stippling by Thunderhorn.

Pretty amazing work, huh!

Nice bows Matt. David, I too purchased the checkering tools but I'm a little leery to try it on an actual riser. I'm thinking maybe the stipple might be the answer instead?????? Lloyd

stippleing is done with a dremmel tool and a burr bit. You just put dots in a pattern.I put it on one of my bows, I like it. Your bow wont slide around as bad when shooting with a glove on.

I've been interested in stippleing and/or checkering also.  Could folks please post pictures of your checkered or stippled bows.

Raging Water, what coin is that on the stippled bow? Thanks

This is stippling I tried for the first time on a recurve I made. I like the random application of the dipples better than a pattern...just me. After doing it I took some steel wool and softened the edges then shot it with sealer. It's not the best job. But for a first timer I'm happy with it.

David, you built the bow and did the stippling? VERY NICE.. And I see some other wood-working skills in the back-ground eh. Must be nice    ....Lloyd

It is not a coin. It is a Celtic Broach of a Dragon that Duane inlayed for me.

The bow I made was sealed with a conversion varnish that you can get from Sherwin-Williams.
