I was interested in buying a hunting knife that I was told had a 440 stainless steel blade and was wondering if it was a decent steel for a utility hunting knife?
THANK YOU

Ringneck

If it's 440C it is a good grade. Nothing spectacular but makes a nice blade. If cryo treated it will hold an edge comparable to 154CM that has not been cryo treated. If they don't say what grade of 440 it is assume that it is a lower grade.

Yeap IF it says 440C and properly heated treated you've got a dang good knife blade there.
Most people get rich by making more money than they have needs, me, I just reduced my needs!

Flying Dutchman

If it says only 440 then it probably is 440A, which is a low grade steel. I would stay away from it. In the past I bought several 440's but I wasn't happy with them. Yhe dulles easily, sliced poor, and were not easy to sharpen.

Later I moved over to better steel, like ATS34, S30V, 154CM and 440C. These steels I can highley recommend.
It don't mean a thing if it ain't got that string! [/i]
