???? building 1/4" shaft kids arrows

Is there a secret to tapering the point end of a 1/4" wood shaft to receive 1/4" field points?
I've tried my 5/16 Bear Paw taper tool but it won't cut shaft deep enough to seat in the point without removing to much wood to allow a decent bonding of the glue. Having same problem using a pencil sharpener. Both work well on nock end.
Should I just sand point end lightly and try to force point in as far as possible? Or is there a way to taper shaft for the points to glue on well?

Maybe try the crimp on points from 3 rivers. If you find a solution let us know. I'll be doing some soon.

When I've made 1/4" arrows I've tapered with a Woodchuck. No problems there. Not sure how to advise if you are using pencil shappener-type taper tools.

Greg,
Don't have any problems using the Bear Paw on 5/16, 11/32, and 23/64 shafts. But they don't make a 1/4" adapter. I'm only making 1/4" shafts for my Grandson and he will hopefully be shooting 5/16 before long.
The price of the woodchuck just isn't feasible for making 3 or 4 dozen arrows for him.
I do own a few different types of sanders, perhaps I could make some type of jig for getting the correct taper for the points.
I'm fishing for ideas.......

Some 1/4" points take an untapered shaft.

Yeah, that's not enough to spend a bunch on the Woodchuck. But, if you're halfway handy and have sanders available, what do you think about cobbling together one of these:

Eric, unfortunately I'm not that lucky, cause the ones I have won't fit without being tapered.
Greg, guess you just proved I'm not a shopper, and still living in the dark ages. I've never noticed that taper block on 3 rivers site or any other site for that matter. I tend to find what I need and go, I hate shopping.
That looks like just the ticket, and rather easy to make. But for 12 bucks also not a bad deal since it can be used on arrows for my entire Tribe.
Thanks for enlightening me!

Bawana. I have that taper block as well. Don't hesitate to get it if you can't make one. It works great and for the cost can't beat it!

Try wraping some masking tape behind the area that will taper. Just wrap on till you a snug fit, taper. Then unwrap the tape and use it on the next shaft, taper, and do the same with all the shafts you have to taper.
By useing the same piece, you'll know the fit will be just right on all the shafts.
Works like a charm

Its not the best way, but a piece of 1/4"ID x1" tygon tubing slid over the shaft will adapt it to a larger sized taper tool.

If you slide the shaft into a Bic pen, it acts as a guide for the 5/16 taper tool...works every time!!

I wrapped the shaft with a little painter's tape to fit the 5/16" pencil sharpener. Worked fine.
