I currently shoot a martin hatfield takedown in 55# and a martin bamboo viper at 55#. I am contemplating going to a PSA V ironwood 52# 60". Any idea if this is a good move?
Should I do something different?
thank you

you will love that widow.... fast, quiet, dependable, I like the looks of the PCH,  but widows are great bows and great people to work with...

Should I stay with 55# or go down to 52# AS THEY SUGGESTED?

I can't comment on your current bows.  The PSA is a nice bow.  I had a 60" PSAV, but for me it was too heavy mass weight.  I like the plain old II and III's weight wise.  That is a big riser with a heavy wood.  If that is what you want you are all set.  It was a great shooting bow and very accurate.  I now have a PCHX cocobolo.  Also a heavy mass weight, but smaller riser than the PSA.  I still may go to a PCH II or III just to get a lighter riser, but then I shoot LB's most of the time so any TD recurve feels heavy.

I would shoot it first to see if you like it. Widows are great bows, BUT just dont shoot well for me.(the grip doesnt fit my hand well).

I have a PSAIII at 58".  It is a great bow and very solid through the shot. If I were buying one today, I'd buy a PCH in 56" but I have only a 26" draw.

Those fellows know their business. Be careful about too much weight. If you buy the heavier one it will cost $140-150 to have it reduced by 3-5 pounds some day.  Although I just looked at your post again. If you are shooting 55# recurves now I don't know why you would drop down unless you aren't getting to a solid anchor with ease?

I've shot clear through two deer this year with 46# at 21 and 16 yards.

Take a good long look at the PCH, in any flavor.  Widow does have a trial program, give them a call.   I like the PCH best, have owned and shot about every bow made in Nixa, Mo  :archer:

Most definitely do a test drive or two to try the bows and maybe a couple grip options to be sure if you are considering ordering one.  If you are going with used just pay a fair price and shoot it a while.  Hard to go wrong on a used widow as they hold value well if you buy them right.

HvyHitter is right. I'd test drive the bow you have in mind. The money you spend on shipping is well worth knowing for sure the bow feels good to you. It's a lot of money but well spent if the glove fits.

Anyone has tried a martin hatfield and a PSA V that can give an idea of the differences?
Thaqnk you

I shot an SAII for 15 yrs, then bought a PCH this year, and I love it.  use the "test drive" that Black Widow offers.  You can have a choice of 3 or the grips that they offer, or you can have them copy one of other bows if you'd like.  Very easy to deal with. good luck.

I made that same move in 2005. Went from a 55# @ 30" martin hatfield to a PSA V ironwood 53# @ 30" Both were 62". The best thing i ever did. Nothing bad to say about the hatfield but the PSA was so much a smother draw i thought they missed the weight on the bow, it felt 10# lighter I had to put it on a scale to see for my self and it was right on 53#. It was like night and day. This was my experiance your milage may very.

I own a psax in kingwood and it is a fine shooting bow. You will not be disapointed. Not to mention that they sure are pretty. I got mine at 47# at 28" and it really zings an arrow.   :archer2:

I have loved every Black Widow that I have ever owned and thats been a few.  Currently shooting a PLGA.  Great bow and great company!!

I have shot both of the bows. I owned a hatfield. It is a decent bow.It is lighter in mas weight than the BW.The only down side to the hatfield is it kind of stacked at my thirty inch draw. It is not cut past center like the BW. For the price range the hatfield is a great bow. The BW is more expensive , heavier in mass weight so it is more stable. The BW draws smoother and does not stack. You can get different grips and a wider selection of draw weights, and woods. The psa is also faster. They are both very good bows, I like my BW's best.

I own 2 black widows and they are nice but if I where you I'd try to attend a traditional 3D shoot somewhere and try a few diffrent things.

Funny thing: I've had (and have) quite a few magnificent custom bows; they've served me well, I've really enjoyed them, and I'm glad I've got them. These days, I'm shooting custom Black Widows, Hills or Silvertips. But I could've had the same success and adventure if I had've simply stuck to my original bow, an over-the-counter Martin Hunter. So, why all my good words about my customs? Not because they kill more game or have any more magic than the Martin, but just because I fell in love with the magic of bows and fine craftsmanship, and wanted to experience and enjoy as wide a range as possible.

I own 1 PSA111 49@28 and 60in. and a PSAV 48#@28 and 60in. Can not say enough good things about them. Sent PSA111 back a year ago and had 4 pounds taken off. Suits me better now. Really like the low grip best. Just one opinion. Roy
Maybe it is time to shoot what I have on the rack

Cal bow

I own a PMA and I have no complaints
