Hunting blades

It's been mentioned before of the types of hunting knives that we all carry during the hunt, well since the thought crossed my mind I thought to share a picture of what I normally carry in the woods with me in the form of edged cutlery.

 

(1) British Belt Ax since I don't carry a firearm "when bowhunting" for that Yote or Mean dog encounter.
(2) Bench Made folder, been a constant friend for many years.
(3) French Trade knife "my neck knife, never in a shoot or in the woods without it."
(4) Knives of Alaska light hunter & Cub, cleaned a many a critter with those two.
(5) Gerber Multi tool, very nice to have.

Those are sweet I have a kershaw in the pocket. A USMC issued K-bar on the hip and a Helle on the way.

Seriously, you pack all those on any given hunt?

Lots of weight there.  I carry a light tomahawk, a 3 inch leaf bladed knife, and that is it.  The hawk is sharp enough to do a lot of the work and the 3 inch knife is all I ever need for most of the work I have in the woods or on an animal.

Nothing wrong with being well armed mind.  Just a lot of weight if you hike long distances to hunt.

If you trip we can follow the blood trail.Thats a lot of cutting utensils to run around with,Do you also carry a samurai sword?

I go a lot lighter than that, one Puma Skinner and one Buck 303 pocket knife.

If you like to carry all of those blades, more power to you.  It does not look like that much additional weight to me.  
Packing in a blind or a stand is the biggest pain in the butt for me, not the blades I carry in my pack.

That french neck knife....that wouldn't happen to be a Dean Hazuka blade would it?   I have a small neck knife that looks identical to it.

I got this handsome knife from a famous horseman.
It is the one that taught me how handy a neck knife is.



There is a Buck Vanguard in my pack for heavy stuff. It usually cuts tracheae and esophagi, and is there in case I need to make a shelter or dogsled or summat.

Coast lockback is my main knife, I have a nice little skinner that I keep in camp.

I have been carrying the same Old Timer 3 blade pocket knife and using it going on 11 years now.  I use it for gutting while in the field.  Once I get back to camp I skin with it but after that I use my Buck Folder to finish up.

The Hawk is this years idea which may or may not stick with me, mostly it's because my wife knows there is Yotes & Black Bear in my hunting area & she worries since I carry no firearm when I carry my bow "no CWP."

As far as the multi tool I may be taking that out as well since I have very little use for it "no gadgets to fix"

The Knives of Alaska kit & my Bench Made have been to numerous hunts with me & more than likely stay & my Neck Knife has been a constant in the woods companion for 2 years now.

Always carry my Gerber Harsey Air Ranger in my pocket 365 days a year. Boker Tactico in my pack for a back up and larger chores. Original made in the USA Shrade Sharpfinger. Folding saw. Diamond coated sharpening steel.

I read where a lot of the old time mountian men and trappers carried two hawks to ward off wolves and most anything that could attack them.

I always carry my Leatherman wave with me. I can't tell you how many times that thing gets used. The blades and saw access from the outside and are one-hand opening, so it's super handy. I left it at a friends house once, and I must have reached for it 20 times that day. The saw is awesome for pruning branches too.

When hunting I carry a Knives of Alaska Alpha Wolf in my pack. I've only had it a few years, but it has dressed and skinned many deer in its history. The S30V blade is really tough and holds an edge a long time.

My cousin makes knives and this is one I always carry with me for the skinning if I get fortunate enough.

I carry a tiny Swiss army (knife, file and scissors) in my pocket.
Havalon piranta knife for caping and other work where a small blade is needed and a gerber straight blade/ bonesaw folder for rough work and removing the skull plate.

Used all three in Alaska this year and was plenty.  I carry a DMT diamond stone for touching up.
