Help me pick a broadhead...

Hey, I finally got an arrow set up that I really like. 28.5 in. 2018 with a 200 gr. point. They're fairly heavy, but fly awesome.

So now I'm lookin for a broadhead. Is there a 200 gr. screw in that comes razor sharp? I'm pretty bad with a file and can't exactly afford a KME right now. I was looking at Muzzy Phantom SS's but I'm not sure if those come sharp enough. And they're pricey.

WW elite or VPA terminator come in 200 gr. They do require a stone or file though. 3  blades are easy though....just set 2 blades on the file/stone at a time

Try an Ace or Eclipse with a steel insert to get your desired weight.You dont have to be good with a file, theyre super easy to file and the price is right .What more can you ask for?

I second the Eclipse broadheads, pretty easy to make scarey sharp.

I haven't used them yet but those VPA's look awefully good.They should be a no brainer to sharpen if you have a good flat stone.Even if you don't have a stone,you can get some different grit wet or dry sand paper and lay that on a plate glass,steel plate or some other hard,flat surface.Start with 220 grit and work finer as you see fit.

At any rate,you need to learn to sharpen.You should practice with broadheads to assure proper flight,so you have to resharpen after.Broadheads of course need resharpened after shooting at game and they really should be touched up after a few days carrying in the quiver.

I think texbow2's suggestion is a good one.

With the 3-blades like woodsman broadheads, use a fairly small file like a 6" mill file so that you are sharpening rather than trying to make the blades perfectly flat. The trick to getting them sharp is to reduce the pressure on the file as you go so that the last dozen or two strokes on each pair of blades is only the weight of the file. There is a good video on sharpening woodsman BHs on the 3 Rivers website. You will be able to make them shaving sharp with just a 6" file if you take your time and reduce the pressure to just the weight of the file.

Woodsmans make a big hole and a good blood trail.

JimB, I do know how to sharpen. I actually shot eclipses last year with some Cedars. I got them sharp enough to shave hair, but it took me a loooong time. I had a hard time getting a good edge on them. I thought maybe a guy could bypass all that time. Maybe I'll pull em out of my drawer tonight and work on em a bit.

K Morgensen....I met Fred Eichler at the Muzzy shoot last weekend. I asked him about how he sharpens his Phantoms. He told me just shoots them right out of the package. He does pretty well with them but I still prefer to touch them up so I can shave with them. However, a real nice 200 grain head is the NAP Razorcap. It's 3 blades and sharpens really easily and holds the edge. Every animal I have killed with them has gone down in sight.

I love snuffers but they are a little hard to sharpen and rust drives me crazy. I'm going to use the Muzzy phantom 220gr

Okay, just did some reading and think I will go with WW Elite/VPA's. I should be able to sharpen these on a 12 in. file or a flat stone right? (Just making sure) The method that 3 rivers shows seems fool proof...

If they're as sharp as they should be, they'll go thru a deer like it was a bag of water.

Check out our 150 grain Phoenix broadheads.  With a 50 grain insert you would be right at 200 grains.  They are 26 degrees sharper than a typical 3-blade head and really easy to sharpen.  You can sharpen them with a file, use a simple to build jig, or as I found out from L82HUNT, a member here, you can just use a redi-edge and get them hair poppin' sharp.  Here's a link to a video that he did, impressive.

For the sharpening impaired I would say Ace or ribteks, though the later are gettin hard to find. Either of those heads get shaving sharp with only a accusharp.

If I didn't already have so many Phantoms and Razorcaps I suspect I would be looking at the VPA Terminators.
