I have ordered some skins from 3-rivers. for my bow.  its  walnut with silk backing. I have applied about 5 coats of tru-oil on it, can i put the skins over the finish i have now.
smooth seas never made a skillful sailer.

I always put the skins on before I cleared the bow, so the tite bond II would hold the skins on.  If I put them on limbs that were finished. I would sand the finish off to roughen them up so the skins would stick.

Honestly I would spray the back with a finish that is compatible to Tru Oil. Perhaps a poly and then rough it up . make sure you sand the Tru oil before you do that too. I would not trust the glue to hold on Tru Oil but it definately should on the poly. Good luck and God Bless, Steve

I agree, I would at least rough it up with sandpaper first.

The Tite-bond glue will hold better to the tru-oil finish better than to bare wood itself. Just rough your finish up as was mentioned. I generally use a Tru-oil or varnish under a skinned or sinew job to help keep out moisture. Hope that helped. ART B

Thanks Art, I have not tested it and didn't trust the Titebond over the oil  but know it will hold on poly. god Bless , Steve
