How many knives do you carry when Elk hunting and Kind

Ragnarok Forge

One,  3 inch bladed skinning knife.  It does all the work I need it to and will skin and quarter the entire elk with one sharpening.  I have never had a reason to carry a larger knife.  I also carry a tomahawk for breaking breast bones and slitting pelvises.

I carry two just in case one gets dull. But since I got a Helle knife it will easily do an entire elk. In fact if it is real sharp it will do two. It is the best knife I have ever used. It has a four inch blade triple laminated. A three inch would also be big enough. Gary

I carry a folding benchmade with 3" blade.  Light weight and has the clip for your pocket.  If it dulls, I can get it sharp again easy enough...You don't need a big knife to cut up an elk.

Tree Killer

I keep three knives in my pack. I very seldom field dress an elk anymore, been using the gutless method on elk for several years.

An old Buck folding knife for general purpose use.

A Helle I use for slicing meat, cutting through hide, and working around bones.

And a Gerber Skinner that is for skinning ONLY! It never touches bone or cut through hide.

I carry two. My Dad's custom Bohrman sheath w/3 inch blade that he passed down and a locking fold no name.

But the no name has a carbon steel blade and takes a wicked edge. The steel is a lot like those old chefs knives before stainless came on- easy to sharpen into razor sharpness.

I used to carry 3 knives and a sharpener.I carry this Havalon Piranta now.

I have been using some version of this now for skinning everything.  It is awesome.  You can make all of the cuts, including creating a cape, and you can use this for most of the skinning work as well.  Pretty nifty tool. You insert and just unzip the animal.  That easy.

On the clip it says "superknife" and on the blade holder it says US patent 6354007.  The blade is a replacable shingle cutting tool.

I also carry a good (smaller) knife and a small lightweight carbide sharpener.

This little "Tooth" with it's 3" blade would do it I'm thinkin..

I notice a lot of fold-up knives. I used to use them but got sick of having to clean out all the gunk from the mechanism after I got home. Gary

AKCrazyhorse

I don't hunt elk anymore but I do hunt moose, bear and caribou and carry just one knife.  My helle.
