New to Traditional

New to traditional archery. Been shooting compounds for a couple of years.Seemed to be no challenge after awhile. I started about 6 months ago with a Redwing Hunter 58"...44 lbs. I pull about 26 1/2 inches so I don't  pull that much weight.
I ordered a Martin Mamba last week. ..50 lb, after talking with alot of people.. I know I won't be pulling that much weight due to my short draw...I have some ideas about arrows but not really sure. I have inquired about the length, weight, and type to many folks and get many, many different answers. Any help would be appreciated .. I beleive I will probably use wooden arrows to hunt with but will probably shoot alot of carbon  for practice.I can see why so many are turning to traditional archery over the compound stuff.I am retired and many of my friends think I will get bored. They are absolutely dead wrong. Having the time of my life living in the woods in East Texas.

Congrats on "finding" traditional archery.

I too am retired and am loving it. I told my wife recently "this is what life should be like".

You will get a lot of different answers on here regarding arrow types and such. Bottom line will be... find what works best and what you want. I don't think you could go wrong with wood, carbon or aluminum... as long as they are set up to the bow and your needs.

Welcome to the family. You have the same draw length as I, so I can help you with your arrows. I shoot wood, lots of aluminum, and started with carbons last year.

I usually advise for aluminum, for the price factor and consistency. For a 50@28 bow I would suggest 1916 cut to 27.5 or 28 (Your draw length may lengthen as your form develops). I find that a lot of my bows like a 2013 shaft, cut to 28" and with a 175 grain head on them. Just seems to be a good balance for my longbows and recurves ranging from 52 to 47 at 28".

Gold Tip 35-55 shafts are proving to be my favorite carbon. Again, I am using a 175 grain head, and I am cutting them to 28".

Ask lots of questions, but be sure to use the search feature here. A lot of your questions have been asked before and answered by folks with lots of experience. I have only been shooting for forty-five years, but there are some here with more years and a faster learning curve.   :D

Welcome aboard! I agree with Killie on the 1916 aluminums. I would probably want to start with them longer and cut them down until you get the kind of flight you want with your preferred head weight. I have found it much easier to cut some more off than to add some later.    :rolleyes:  

I would probably go with Beman ICS Bowhunter 500 shafts for carbons. They are cheaper than the GTs and I find they have more consistent spine. Some of the GT 35-55s are stiff little buggers.

I shoot a heavier head than Killie, normally 230-235 grains with a total weight of 510 to 520 grains. I shoot the 510 grain arrows from my 46# Kanati to great effect. I do draw pretty close to 28" though.

As Killie mentioned, your draw length will probably stretch as your form and back muscles develop.

NOW you tell me that Gold Tips have spine "issues"! That's why I switched from Carbon Express! I liked the Gold Tips because they took all the same inserts, no matter the spine. I have bought two dozens and they spine the same.

If the bow is 50 lb @ 28", you will be pulling about 46 lb at 26.5". For a 28" BOP arrow and 125 gr point a 55-59 should be right on. I'd recommend tapered fir, but I'm a bit prejudiced that way. [Big Grin]

Just my personal experience, Killie. Lots of folks get along great with GTs. It just seemed like I had to front load the heck out of them to get them to fly right for me. The Bemans seemed to tune up easier... for me.

I've managed to stay on the green side of the turf for 57 years, though sometimes I wonder how.    :eek:
