g'day guys

i was reading on a tuning guide that if you want to shoot off the shelf that 5 inch feathers have to be used is this correct and i have a samick phantom recurve 62 inch long what brace height should the bow be around i know it depends on the arrow but around what should i start at the recommended manufacturors is 8.25 to 8.75 but that seems to much and working through that range the bow still seems to be noisy

Mick, you can use any "feather" you like,,,just can't be plastic vanes because they don't flex well enough to clear your shelf properly.
Brace on a 62" recurve,,,I'd start at 7.5 and expect to end up around 8".

All the best.
Winning or losing is not the important thing,,the important thing is how well you played the game.

Don't know much about your bow, but if the five inch feather thing is true, then I guess I'm gonna have to remove my 4" feathers from my arrows,   :(    ;)    'cause I shoot off the shelf!    :scared:      :saywhat:  Dang! And they shot so well, too!

Actually, I would recommend reading a different tuning guide. Five inch feathers is a very common length to use with trad archery, but by no means always necessary. Generally, the larger diameter the arrow shaft the more feather it takes to stabilize the arrow. But that's definitely not set in stone. How well your arrow spine matches your bow plays the largest part in how well your arrow flies. A well tuned arrow/bow combination won't require the largest feathers there are to make great arrow flight, but they will create more drag on your arrow.
