Canoe trip help

Trying to plan a canoe trip with me, my dad, and brother. My ultimate trip is to boundary waters but thats going to have to wait a few years.

Who knows of some great canoeing rivers that can provide a good 3-5 day trip with good fishing. I chance at chasing something with a bow would be great too. It would be in the summer so any hunting would probably be hogs or small game. (my favorite anyway)

Well i hope its ok for me to post this here. I figured a bunch of like minded guess would know some great adventures like this.

Depending on where you are in Texas (east or west) I think you have some cool options. Maybe not 5 daays but some good 2-3 day trips.

If you are closer to out west the Guadelupe or Nuecces(sp?) is great floating and fishing. There is some good floating on the east side of the state that goes through some of the Federal forest lands.

If you want to go out of state, I can highly recommend the Buffulo and White Rivers in Arkansas. You can make floats of any length there and it is GREAT smallmouth fishing.

Stabilizers for the canoe may be something to consider based on activities and experience of your paddlers.

I have been on Canadian and BWCA trips.  We used to do three a year, but only on one or two the last four years. The Bdub is a cheap trip if you have the basics and do self outfitting.  Most lakes are clean enough to drink straight out of the lake and you can supply your food pack with Mountain House freeze dried food to keep things simple and light.  I think a Bdub trip is easier and more rewarding than most river trips.  Time on the road is the only real draw back from Texas.  Things change fast and the Bdub is totally a doable trip.

I have done the Brazos from the dam at Possum Kingdom Lake.
The fishing was good.

Not sure how far one can float the Pecos but section I hunted sure was beautiful and nice looking river to float.

We are all three experienced canoers, can handle swift water and obstacles pretty well.

I live in Burnet County, my brother in nacogdoches and dad in jasper. My brother might already be in North Carolina this summer so anywhere out there or in between would be great too.

We weren't wanting to make it too hard of a trip on everyone this year. We are trying to start a yearly thing and this would be the first year.

The white river looks like what I was wanting.
The farther from home we go the more we are going to need a good outfitter with descent canoes. Just no salt water and no deserts.

Take my advice, always use a water filter.
Beaver fever is a real drag.
I have a place on the edge of the BWCA, don't drink directly out of any lake, river, or creek.
You might get lucky a time or two, eventually your luck will run out, and your trip will end ugly.

The White also has great trout fishing in the upper reaches. Stocked rainbows, and browns that are no longer stocked but reproduce naturally. I used to do a couple of trips a year to the Buffalo City area, near where the Buffalo enters the White. We used a john boat, motoring upstream a couple of miles and drifting back to camp. Much fun. The Buffalo is a more exciting canoeing stream, and a trip that went from the Buffalo to the White would cover both good smallmouth and good trout fishing. It's been a few years since I was up there, but it's Corps land along the banks, so it should still be good. Bonus: you might see elk along the Buffalo.

Thought about the Guadalupe but I have canoed a lot of Texas and want to see something different. Also, I know part of the Guadalupe can be really crowded in the summer. Would like to get away from people if possible.

I looked at the buffalo river and that seems great. Do you camp at certain sections of the river or just where ever you land? Sand banks, rock, or forest floor?

are you allowed to take your bow on the buffalo sense its in a national park?

probably not but there probably isn't many that would allow hunting anyway. Definitly not in Texas

Nightowl, I only camped along the White, but you could camp anywhere along the bank and on islands, wherever there was a good spot. Some sand banks, but most banks are wooded. Flow on the White varies with the amount of water released for the turbine generators at the dams, so you have to be sure you're above the high-water line, and be sure you get your boat high enough when you beach it! Lots of ticks in places, too.

Camping near where the Buffalo entered the White, we went up the Buffalo to bathe. The White is too cold!
