Has anyone called hogs when hunting, with electronic or mouth type calls? Any books on the subject?

NorthernCaliforniaHunter

I've tried it with no success. Not saying it isn't possible, it may very well be that I don't talk pig well enough. I've used mouth and electronic calls.

Yes!  It can work very well, almost too well sometimes and then scare them off the next, I am really hesitant to call at pigs now unless I bump them, then I will grunt or growl to slow them down or make them stop and investigate, but it is really hit or miss in most situations.
When they do respond really aggressively to your calling then it gets hairy, especially when they come charging in and are running all over ya.
They'll be no quitters till we bag us some critters!

Thanks for the info. I'am going to hunt hogs in Florida in 3 weeks. I always see them soon enough but don't always guess right on which way they will keep going. Maybe I'll just keep trying to get ahead of them.

Where are you going to be hunting them in Florida?  I'm going near Arcadia this weekend.

I've done it with some success after seeing Curtis do it at 7th age.

He's about 1/2 hog though I think.

I've had about the same results as Mark. Every now and thenm I can call one back with some soft feeding grunts. At the very least, if you spook them and they don't smell you, they will stop and listen and calm down but they'll stay on extra alert for a while.
I have also made loud lip smacking sounds around food sources and called them in. They're looking for food and you cn feed 'em a sharp Phantom.

Just listen to them sometime, they'll tell you what to say!

I've used a grunt call and a squeal call. The squeal call never worked for me, but I've called three boars within a few yards with the grunt call.  I've also used the grunt call to settle pigs if i accidentally stepped on a twig while stalking.  Although they seem to work,  I don't take them hunting anymore.

I hunt hogs all the time. I never tried a call, but I would be interested in using one. Does someone recommened a particular model?

I'm about 50/50 as well. I've used a grunt call and had them come right in. I've also used a grunt during a stalk where quite sneaking just wasn't possible. I was crawling up to them and grunting the whole way. Let me get within 10 yards.
On the other side of the coin, I've hit the grunt call and had them run for the hills...
Doesn't seem to be any ryhme or reason either way. Guess I can't think like a pig..

I've had quite a few big boars respond to a grunt call.

Best call I ever heard for a hog is my feeder going off.
