Hi,

I'm relatively new to archery and have just acquired a 1989 Bear Grizzly bow.  It's a 50# recurve bow.

What arrows should I get for this bow?  I've read somewhere that I should avoid using lighter arrows such as aluminum or carbon since it's close to "dry-firing" the bow.

Lastly, how long does a bow such as mine last?  Do the shooting qualities deteriorate over time?

Thanks, I look forward to learning about traditional archery in this wonderful forum   :D

G'day.

Your bow will last a long time if cared-for.

Most people here shoot carbon or aluminium, it's just that they get them to weigh at least, roughly, 8 grains per pound of bow draw weight (10 is often better), by using heavy tips, heavy inserts, heavy adaptors. You won't have any trouble finding the right arrow. If you tell us your draw length, somebody will be able to suggest something.

One important thing is getting arrows that fly right for you and your bow.

Have fun,

I will defer your question(s) to those with more expertise but I do want to welcome you. There's so much you can learn here but more importantly there are real people on here that genuinely care for each other, so pull up a seat along side the fire, grab a cup of "joe" and enjoy the journey with us. Don't be shy, jump in like you belong here and you do!

Thanks for the warm welcomes.  My draw length is 29" (measured by taking wingspan / 2.5).

The arrows (and bow) will mostly be used for target shooting.
