I was wanting a bear kodiak 70's model. I was wondering if this would be a good choice for a beginning shooter. I was wanting 45 to 55 pounds @ 28 inches. What is the best arrow to shoot @ 55 pounds? Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks Goose

45 lbs is plenty to start with. developing your form is much more important than shooting a heavier arrow.

If you have not shot much, visit a shop that carries some traditional equipment. Talk with them, and try some different models out. If you are looking at a recurve, avoid short or too long (58" to 64" and 40-45#).  Look for something that will work until you develop the form necessary for accurate shooting. Almost everyone wants to move up in weight, or to something a little more spendy. Remember, the bow is not the only you'll want to buy.

Good advice, all around.

If you keep watching the classifieds, something in your range is bound to turn up, and this site is a very very good place to pick up quality used gear.

I like the idea of buying a bow at the low end of your draw weight and getting good at shooting, then moving up in poundage.

When you start shooting, have fun and pick a spot.  And remember, "aim small, miss small; aim big, miss big."

And don't be shy about posting questions if searching the site doesn't answer your questions.  Folks on Tradgang are GREAT!

I have an early 70's Kodiak Hunter, but you can't have it!    :bigsmyl:

Really, though, you've got good advice so far.  Lighter weight, low cost production bow to see that you really like it (you probably will).  Work on your shooting.  Go to a shop or a trad buddy's house and get a bunch of arrows matched and tuned to the bow so that you can shoot decently and not get all put off.  Be careful though, this stuff is like a drug, but it's a lot better for you overall!
