sharp broadheads from factory

I hope this isnt a dumb question, but i just ordered some glue on broadheads and they werent sharpened.  Maybe being new to traditional archery shows but i asked the supplier and he said most glue ons were sold that way.  Is this anyone elses experience?

Yep, just about every time. I dont know of any off hand that come sharp enought to hunt with...not in glue ons anyhow. Someone will chime in if there are.

The Steelforce Sabertooh head is sharp out of the package and its a glue on....Roy

None that I know of do. There is a pretty good reason though. If you are fiddling around trying to get a razor sharp broadhead glued on, it could lead to some spilled blood!

I use glue on heads, even on my carbon arrows, and I prefer to have them mounted before I sharpen. The exception might be three blade heads. I usually clamp them in a vise and go to work with a file. I have found file sharpened heads to work extremely well and to hold an edge much better than highly polished broadheads. I guess if it was good enough for Fred Bear, it's good enough for me.

thanks for the quick replies. I think im gonna get one of the kme broadhead sharpeners, gonna have to do it quick.  Does anyone know if u can sharpen with shafts on that system

Not seen a sharp head yet that weren't a replacable blade. gotta learn how to sharpen or get to be good buddies with a man on here that goes by "sharpster" aka Ron.
"sharp" varies greatly ut not many BHds that are labeled "hunting sharp" are anywhere near hunting sharp in my book.

Even if the heads came sharp I would want to shoot them first to be sure they were shooting the way I wanted them to. After doing that they are going to need to be resharpened anyway. Learning how to sharpen a bh is a skill that everyone needs to develop and there are plenty of jigs and kits out there to  help get the job done right.

The steel force glue ons' are scary sharp out of the package. Also, the Zephyr Scirocco are very sharp.  3Rivers has both.

My Abowyers can awfull sharp from the package.Just stroped them on a leather belt and they shaved with ease.

Abowyers and STOS are very sharp outta' the package. All they need is a little honing or stroping after they are mounted.

To answer your question, you can sharpen heads on the arrow with both the KME broadhead Pro and the Knife Sharpener.

Bit more tedious, but I did it with Ron's input on the phone and if this sharpening impaired person can do it...you can.

If...on theother hand, there is not even a bevel started on your broad heads you bought, I'd surely "set the bevel" before mounting them and then do the remaining sharpening to hunting levels after mounted.

Order from Ron and describe your set up and he'll give you advice and then once you have your gear, he'll be there to help w/ any challenges.

No bwhntrjsh,you cannot sharpen a broadhead while attached to the arrow with that broadhead sharpener.But it's a great system none the less and even a "sharpening challenged" knucklehead like me can get 2&4 blade Magnus to mow hair with it.

Sorry Doc Nock,I didn't see your post before I typed mine and wasn't aware you could do it with the arrow attached.Just seems the clamp wouldn't lay flat on the stone and with flipping the broadhead over and over again (double bevel)and all.

I'm sure you meant a more traditional head but thunderheads are scary sharp. They are a little bit of a pain to put together without a broadhead wrench but they are so sharp you need one anyways.

You're right about it being a bit unhandy, but that Ron Swartz has a way. He told  me to apply finger pressure to the point edge to counter balance the shaft...and by golly....it works!

Again, I'd set the bevel on a dull head off the shaft...but once mounted and oriented, I've shot targets with them and then tuned them up on the head... had to. Worked fine following Ron's directions.
