Bear Baiting / Honey Burns

Guys,

I need some simple ideas on how to do a honey burn for bears? any advice is helpfull.

Can of Sterno. Can for the honey. Sterno stove or some method to support the honey can over the top of the Sterno can. Light and climb into your stand.
Make sure to check regulations - not legal in all States.
I've done a number of them with mixed results. More often than not I can't say it helped or not, but then again the last time I used one I did shoot a bear.

Here in WI they are illegal along with bacon burns. I would check your local regs before doing one. Liq smoke works great to get the bait started.

I did the sterno/honey can burn, made ME hungry it smelled so good. It did not last real long though, maybe I need a bigger can of honey, don't know I only did this one time. I can not imagine a bear could resist a tempting smell like a good honey burn.

BTW. I used the little fold down alum. stove to rest the can of honey on that sterno makes. Unfold the stove, slip the sterno can in, light sterno, set can-o-honey on top and away you go. eze peezi japaneze.

make sure and do not fill your can to full with honey or you may have a bit larger honey burn then planned.The best way is a smaller can inside a coffee can.Works great and the bears love it.bd

I used a small one burner propane stove and pan. Bacon first, then the "bear crack" raspberry jello mix, marshmellows,maple syrup and honey. Poured it on the bacon. Worked great for me.

Bill,where you plan on using that?

Years ago small game hunting on Old Mine Road I had a young bear follow me. Couldn't figure out why. Then I realized I had Snickers bars in my vest pockets.

Buy a dozen Dunkin Donuts. Jelly ones are good. Throw out of your stand. Just eat a couple first.

So i read on some of the threads that you actually burn the honey? like set it on fire so it has a flame? then blow it out? and it will smolder?

Or do you just heat it and let it boil over for a while?

It's just like setting a can of honey on your kithen stove and heating up to a boil.

Now I have only hunted bear once and I was told to do a honey burn ever time I baited. It will create a dinner bell assocation. I would burn the honey or do "bear crack" as steadman did. I used a one burner stove heated the honey until it bubbled and smoked for about 20 min. Make sure to pour out the burn where you can shoot they will go right to the leftovers. The bear crack I would wipe on logs and trees,it will keep them entertained for days if you can't bait everyday. Wear I hunted I baited around 11:00 am and it would carry the smoke up the ridge with the termals. Every bear that came into my bait aproached from the same direction the wind blew that day.

P.S don't use the wife's good pans!
