looking for good texas/south texas hunts...

hello all, we are from michigan and are planning to make a trip for hogs and javelina.
ive seen some ranches offer 1buck,1doe,hog,javelina for like 125-200 per day.

if this is the norm, how do i pick?????
i gues word of mouth and references!
so if you know of someone to hook us up with a nice hunt i would greatly appreciate it!

we are thinking of a 3 day hunt,as itl take 2 days to get there and 2 days to drive home.

its a long way i know but im hoping that there will be lots of game down there to make it worth our while.
we do not like the idea of fenced hunts.

ive looked at 7th age but no email contacts are working...

any more out there?

im looking at times of hunts...is late dec/early jan 2009 too late in the year or in a breeding season?

That would probably interfere with the extended deer season in South Texas. Best time is March-May. You can hunt during the summer but it will WEAR YOU OUT! The popular thing to do is schedule your hunt during a full moon. Then you corn the roads before dark and then spot and stalk them at night when it's cooler.

The pigs breed year round (not sure about the javi's)

Just a guess but at $125 a day, the bucks you encounter won't be much in the antler category and most of those per day places I've seen have been pounded for weeks before you get there.

The Wensels Pig-gig is going on right now, you might wanna check that out for next year if you can live without the deer.

im not really looking for deer as the time frame at first mention was a late deer season..im checking with scheduals and trying to come up with something.
ive/weve taken countless deer.

but never a hog or a javie!
i think it will be a hoot!

just primarily looking for a spot to hunt with better than average odds of taking some shots!

We have been hunting javelina for several years now. We skin them and then bone the meat off. Don't open them up ( guts) as it is not worth it. You can get all the meat off from the outside. Cut the front and hind quarters off and bone them, plus the neck meat. That is about all there is on them. From an average size javelina you will get 10-15 lbs of meat. We mix it 1/2 and 1/2 with regular ground pork to give it some fat and make it go further. Mix in your favorite sausage seasonings. We usually make German and Breakfast sausage. Have made several others but this is the best. Take a soup can, cut out both ends and pack the meat in it. This will give you about 1 lb. Push the meat out and wrap for freezing.
Be sure and cut a few teeth out for suvinors, you will need a small saw as the teeth are about as long inside the jaw as outside.

Serving Javie is best done slow in a dutch oven or smoker. It is wonderful meat. Too bad there is only a little on one.

Just my two cents but Texas is not the only place with pigs and they are not any easeir in Texas then say Florida. With what it sounds like you have in mind, the southeast states will save you 2 days of driving or give you two more days of hunting time depends on how you look at it. I'd rather hunt then drive and that's why I fly to Texas.

One thing that I would mention, make sure you know all of the cost involved, I've seen some places charge per pound over a certain weight, and then also charge for each inch of cutter over a certain length, so they can get quite expensive.

Javelina is good meat. I have boned them out just as you would deer. Just be careful when skinning the back to cut around and take out the musk glands with the hide and don't get it on the meat. I muscle out the hams and cut it and the back strap up in small round stakes that fry up just like deer stakes. I can mix the javelina in with deer and you won't be able to tell the difference. They are also great barbqued whole.
