Hey guys and gals, simple question. I have a 69' Grizzly that is in need of a new rest/strike plate. What the safest way to clean off the old glue without harming the finish?

Thanks!

I have used Goo Gone before, it didnt harm the finish. Got it at Wal-Mart

If it's kind of rubbery, a hair dryer can get it soft enough to work on.

I don't worry much about scraping since the area will be under leather and I just clean it and then tape off and refinish just that part.

I have used WD-40 to get sticky stuff off.

try gasoline. that was the only thing that worked to get my shelf clean. i use a rema tip top contact cement to glue the shelf material on. when i wanted to change it, gas was all that worked. try acetone too, that works on most stuff that is self adhesive.

Be careful w/acetone.  It can actually soften the glue/resin that holds glass together.  Don't leave it puddle and sit.

A little bit of Goo Gone on a rag.

I second the WD40. Just cleaned one up last week and tried it- worked great.

I use my finger nail, a little bit of goo gone with paper towel. Finish up with denatured alcohol or a bit of acetone to make sure there is no oily residue.

I also have a Grizzly and use acetone. After reinstalling the stock material, I take a single edged razor and trim the leading edge of the strike plate for a smoother transition on those fletchings that may occasionally hit it. Good luck.
