Colorado Turkey Hunting

Started hunting traditional this year and had the time of my life chasing elk this fall. Had a couple of close calls but couldn't get a shot. I'd like to hunt turkeys this spring. I have never hunted them before. I've been searching the TG site and have found some great info. Any other tips or suggestions for a newbie turkey hunter?

GO TO NEBRASKA!!!  there are hardly any turkey here.  Some in the Rampart Range But way over hunted and rediculous to locate.  Iv'e seen them running around pingree park in the late fall, and one 2 years ago up there but It's well worth the trip to Public land nebraska.  they are everywhere there

Nebraska is indeed good. Dont rule out Colorado though I live on the front range and hunt an over the counter unit and kill toms every year. Be patient and hunt hard and youll find them, do a little research and ask some dow bioligists and youll find them.

Hunting them with trad gear is fun and challenging and a great excuse to get out in the spring.  There are birds to be found in Colorado.

Two years ago while elk hunting I saw an enormous amout of turkeys everywhere between Pagosa Springs and Durango for what it's worth.

I am just looking for an excuse to get out this spring, some place relatively close. Work starts to pick up for me pretty good then so I would only have a day or two here or there. Then again my ex-girlfriend is from Nebraska. I still get along really well with her and her family. I may just try that angle! Thanks again for the input.

I also go to Nebraska.  I have been going there about 6-7 yrs now and usually get a bird every year.  However, Neb. is really getting high on the license fees.  For the tag and habitat stamp it is over $100.  There are some good areas in Colo, but some require quite a few points to draw.  Several years ago, I hunted outside of Canyon City and there was quite a bit of public ground and lots of birds.  Can't say what it is like not though.
