If you want to try it yourself, it's really easy

I have done several including deer , rabbit and coyote and all with excellent results. If you do a really good job of skinning and getting off all the "meat" you can skip to step 5.
I found this recipe many years ago in an old book, but then lost it. I got wondering around on the Internet a couple of years back and found it again. I have a coyote hat with the face on it that is now 25 yrs old.
You can "break" the hide as per the instructions but if I were making a quiver I think I would leave it stiff.

most local taxidermists send the hides out to be tanned. Moyle is a good chose as well as USA FOX, i have had good luck with both. also you might want to have the taxidermist skin it for you with the paws on, they do an excellent job. i sent one i shot to Aronald Furs and they made me a full length mountain man hat. hat was so warm that i couldn't wear it while walking a lot but was great for sitting on stand!

Look out - something's creeping up on ya!

Cool hat.

just skin it out and salt it. after 24 hours, shake off the salt and resalt it. you can then send it at your on leisure as it will keep for years in a dried state, especially in cold climates. plus it will be heaps cheaper to send and process because it will be less bulky and lighter. however prolonged time salted can have detremental effects in some cases (many years). if you don't know how to skin it it pays to learn as thats part of the hunting experience. IMHO.

that hat was a favorite of mine but i made the mistake of wearing it to my friends house and his young daughter fell in love with it. had to give it to her! my buddy said she slept with it every night and still does. guess it went where it belongs.
That was a cool thing to do Mountain Man! It would be hard to give up such a cool thing as that!
