String set
« on: October 14, 2008, 01:21:00 AM »
I have a older selfbow that has severe string follow, question can I steam or use dry heat to straighten it out.  will this increase draw weight.

Still new to all of this.

Once you get set in a self bow generally you are stuck with it. The cells in the belly have collapsed and that shows up as set. Sometimes you can remove some of the set by tempering the belly while held in reflex but that is temporary and eventually the bow will go back to where it was. To me it isn't worth the effort. You would be better off making another and try not to get as much set as before. Two inches of set isn't all that bad. More than that is iffy. Find a kid to give that bow to and make another.     Pat
