Another Huckaby!

I logged on tonight and was surprised to see my uncles picture up top.  So I decided to go ahead and post a picture of my bear and tell the story.  This is a picture of my bear. I shot him with my Morrison Take Down, Gold Tip Traditional shafts, and Wensel Woodsman broadhead.



I took him in Ontario the first week of September.  I was hunting with my uncle Tony, cousin Gannon (Tony's 16 year old son), and a couple of friends of Tony.  On the first night no one saw any bears but Tony, thats the bear in his picture.  On the second night we all saw bears.  I shot my bear on the third night.  I decided to move to a new bait and Jeremy (another hunter in camp) mentioned one that was getting tore up every day.  He said " I just got a feeling there is something nasty in there!" and he was right.

We snuck in an hung a stand about 12 yard from the barrel and I climbed in.  About 45 min later a sow and 2 cubs came in and raided the barrel, first the cubs then the sow.  I watched them for about 30 min when I saw something black coming thru the brush about 50 yard to my right.  I looked back at the sow on the bait and then back to the right and that's when I first saw him.  He was standing on his back legs staring at me at about 35 yards.  He had a huge head and was taller than the 6 foot spruce trees. He dropped down and came closer, standing up at about 25 yards, again looking at me.  He finally moved on into the bait, ran off the sow and one cub and treed the other.  I watched him at the barrel a few minutes.  He couldn't get his head inside of the 15 gallon barrel so he tipped it over dumping out the bait.  This whole time he was facing me. He then turned around and walked to the far edge of the clearing and stood there a few seconds before taking off like crazy growling and popping his jaws at another boar to run him off.  A minute later I saw the second boar to my right looking at the bait and I was hopeful the big boar would come back in.  Well he did, he came from the right of the barrel, past it and walked towards me, stopping at nine yards facing me.  He stood there for what seemed like forever.  All the time I'm thinking "turn broadside so I can shoot you".  He finally turned to his right, real slowly, or aleast it seemed that way. As he turned, I picked a spot, hit my anchor and the next I knew there was an arrow hitting that spot on the bear.  He growled and bit at the arrow and then took off thru the bush.  Less than a minute later I heard his death moan.  That was cool.

He went about 80 yards after the shot.  It was a good quartering away shot, entering about 10 inches behind the shoulder and exited just in front of the offside shoulder.

It took 5 of us and a deer cart to get him out of the bush, and we broke the wheel on the cart going over a log.  Back at camp we weighted him at just under 350 pounds.  I think he's around 6 1/2 feet nose to tail.

I had a great time, it was an awesome hunt. Three days later my cousin shot the other boar out of the same stand, but that's another story and I'll let him tell it.  

This second picture is of the guys in camp that helped get him out of the bush.  We were all there except for my cousin Gannon, he was out fishing when we took this. Jeremy is over my shoulder, then Mike, and of course my uncle Tony.

Thanks to all for the kind words.  I'm having a half body mount made of him, I'd like to do a whole body but I can't afford the mount or the home addition to make room for it!

Louis I not sure if we're kin or not, it is definitly possible.  Tony's dad, my grandfather, was born and raised in and around Heavner, OK.  Where's your family from?

Great Bear.  Second phot is really good.   The animal is well positioned to show it off tastefully.
