Has anyone tried leather dyes or aniline dies on fir shafts? I was wondering if you have had success. I am going to get some Surewoods and was trying to come up with a color pattern before hand. Thanks Flint  :bigsmyl:

I've used aniline dye's in the past on Douglas Fir and it works great. I like a "mahogony" color.
More red than brown, warm without being gaudy. Doug Fir takes the dye's nicely.

I used some Fiebings walnut leather die, and the arrows turned out nice, if a bit light.  I had someone mistake them for PO cedar.  It took the dye well.

I use aniline dyes all the time, both water based and alcohol based. Both are available in many colors and you can mix the colors to get the color you want. I use aniline dyes on many different kinds of wood but mostly Douglas Fir.

Also have used aniline dyes on D-fir shafts with great success. Best looking ones to me where the warmer browns like walnut, and when I mixed some dye to make a osage color.

The Surewood Fir shafts take stain very well.  As with any wood test it for the color you want on your shaft end first. All woods take stain differntly.  I have a stain color that I use on both the Fir and Cedar that on the Fir it makes it look like slightly darkened Osage.
I prefer the Fiebings Leather stains.  They work great, even the water based ones. I have also used the Minwax stains on them with good results.

Flint, I've never heard of the Surewood's but I've used regular fir. I had good luck w/ Minwax stains. Who sells the Surewood?

Greg, they are made by Doug Knight. Google surewood shafts. Several sponsors here carry them Bull Mtn Archery(Brock)above Raptor Archery(Ted), and the Nocking Point as well. Flint

I use Fiebing's alcohol based leather die as well.  Works fine!
