Woody Weight Spine Question??

Question for any of you guys having knowledge or experience with the Woody Weights reference arrow spine.

I have a current combination that is dead on for spine with a 70-74# shaft. If I add a 75grain Woody Weight, will I need go up to an 85-89# shaft? This is based on adding 3 to 5 lbs spine for every additional 25 grains in head weight.

Or, does shortening the wood shaft to accommodate the length of the Woody Weight somehow make up for this needed stiffness as the shaft would actually be shorter??

I have cedar shafts now cut to 28 1/4"BOP and they are spined perfectly for my longbow with a 160 head, but the overall weight is a tad light for me. I was looking to see if I could cut the shaft and install the 75grain Woody Weight so that it would maintain the same 28 1/4" BOP to the broadhead without having to change to a stiffer shaft.

Sounds like new ground and you will be the reporter for the rest of us. Good point about cutting the length of the shaft, but I am betting the length is more a lever factor and the spine will remain the same meaning you WILL have to jump up a couple spine ranges. Much depends on your bow, center shot bows are not nearly as spine sensitive as off center bows. Let us know what works and the bow set up.

If you are using 160 gr heads now I do not think it will matter. Best thing to do is do one arrow and check your flight. If still flying perfect then you do not need to worry. If not then you can go to heavier spine arrows.

The need to add spine when point weight is added depends on where those arrow fall into your usable spine range, i.e. a bow cut past center will have a much greater usable spine range than a bow cut 1/8" less than center.
Lets say your bow's usable spine range is 60/75#@28" if your shafts spine in the 60# range you should not have a problem, however if they fall in the 75# range then you may have to increase your spine. So without knowing how the bow's shelf is cut, the bows weight, your draw length and arrow length to BOP, its impossible to tell.

Not cut to center straight handle longbow which pulls 65pounds at my draw length of 27 1/2inches. The shafts spine 70-74pounds cut 28 1/4inch BOP with a 160BH. Excellent arrow flight but the total weight averages 590grains which is at the rock bottom end of where I like to be on a hunting arrow (I use the rule of bow weight times ten as ideal, and ideal less 10% as minimum). Adding a 75grain Woody Weight would bring the arrow up to an average weight of 665grains which would be close to my favorite tapered carbons.

I was hoping there were some testing done which would have revealed any spine tendencies with the Woody Weight.

I reckon I'll need to spend the $15 bucks and see for myself if they work.

I asked the guy that was selling them at Denton Hill if he had made a chart yet to help out in that kind of decision making  and he said there were too many variables. Looks like you have to Lewis & Clark it.

I would say you should not have a problem with the additional 75 grs. BUT, your right on the edge of that usable range, so it is just a guess at this point.
