paper tuning ?

The other day I decided to try and paper tune some POC shafts.  A 70-75 was weak.  A 75-80 was almost perfect (slight weak).  Then I tried an 80-85.  It should have shown stiff, but consistantly showed weaker than the 70-75.  This isn't making any since to me.  I was wondering if there is such a thing as a false nock left.

How close is the paper to the drawn arrow's tip?

I'm trying to keep the front of the shelf at around 6'.

Try different ranges.  My guess would be either the 80-85 is ticking your riser and nicking left or it is fishtailing and quickly heading left.  
I am a firm believer in paper tuning, but to get an accurate picture of arrow attitude throughout the whole flight you have to shoot through at different ranges.

Thanks Mike.  I'll try different ranges. I don't think it is ticking the riser, as I don't hear any difference.  But that is what I was wonding could happen.

It is almost impossible to paper tune with trad bows, your release would have to be pretty much perfect. It is possible to get an opposite result as if it is way too stiff you would get the same as a weak tear. Shawn

Exactly what Shawn said. It is a waste of time to paper tune with a trad bow.

Shoot fletched shafts (I tune with my broadheads attched) from 15-20 steps.

If they hit left of aim point ='s too stiff. If your right handed of course.

We paper-tuned some puppies on newspaper once.

paper tune at 15 yards, then fine tune till you get (Right handed)slight up & to the left. Use the same arrow as you would use for hunting. I get bullets at 5 yards. The same distance as my shooting lanes & holes are.

I tried the different ranges.  I'm still getting the same results.  I quit messing around with the stiffer arrow and began fine tuning the 75-80.  It is now shooting bullet holes at any distance from 6' out to 30'.  It looks great in flight as well.

I know alot of people don't like paper tuning trad gear.  I find it to be the easiest way to get my knocking point correct.  Thanks to all.

Well, I'll be...it IS possible to paper tune a stickbow!  I always figured you could since my bareshaft tuned arrow shot perfect holes thru paper when I tried it at a pro shop one day...

Stick some more weight on the tip of those 80-85#. But if the 75-80# shafts are shooting bullet holes go with them. Paper tuning works just as well as bare shafting if done at different distances. You have to let the arrow go through paradox. Each to his own.

You absolutely, positively CAN paper tune a trad bow.  
Fellas, remember this, even if it didn't work for you, that doesn't mean it doesn't work.

I had the worst time trying to paper tune some arrows for my palmer bow. It just showing weird results so I tried bare shaft testing which showed me the tip weight was way to high. Once I moved down from 200 grains to 125 grains the bare shafts flew great. Then I paper tuned to fine tune as needed and got bullet holes. I thnk with paper tuning you have to be in the ballpark or it might give you confusing results since it is so far off.

I should have said paper tuning is a waste on a NON-centershot bow... Try to papertune with a selfbow, BBO ect.

I did not say ya couldn't, I said it is near impossible due to most peoples release, maybe down range but not close to the bows like compounders. Shawn

Yeah John, I think centershot IS the key here. Paper-tuning is certainly not the be-all, end-all to tuning, just one of the many tools to use, that's all.

 This is as good a paper-tuning demo as I\\'ve seen...
