I made mine out of Celetex.  Used metal tape to put it together. 3 40 watt light bulbs did the trick with the Celetex insulation value. Very light weight. I was able to put it on a shelf.

I've had a couple of requests on my hotbox construction so I thought I'd just post it here.  This is just one variation and the dimensions are from Binghams plans.


I made my hotbox out of 1/2" foil backed foam insulation. Very light and easy to move around. Look at the pictures and you can get a pretty good idea of how it is built.

I cut some strips of wood 3/4"X3/4" for the framework to screw the foam to, a long piano hinge, four light sockets, and a dimmer switch. With two 100W bulbs and two 60W bulbs I can get a temp range from 0 to over 160*. For extra strength I cut some squares of paneling to mount on each side of the foil to fasten the light sockets to and also to insulate the foil from the wiring. You can see the dimmer switch mounted to one end of the lid. You don't really even need to fasten the framework strips together, just screw the faom to it.

You will need two sheets of insulation and the dimensions of the box are:

Bottom: 12" wide, 17" tall, 88" long.
Lid: 12" wide, 6" tall, 88" long.







You can see the 3/4"X3/4" wood strips in the pictures and you will want to use THHN wire, 14 gauge is big enough.

Sweet !!! Just a tiny add: if you're garaging it, doing one box that does double-duty for heat and for steam is doable.

One lid with two 90%-of-length swap-out panels. Two swaps for one end piece. 14-guage sheet is doable and lasts forever with anything for insulation, but this Celetex insulation board looks strong enough by itself.

Build it a little deeper and you can bend wood for just about anything human-size.

Go to parts store and get rough service bulbs ....
