Bow for 9 year old?

I need to get a recurve for my 9 year old daughter. She has been shooting the red fiberglass bow we all started with and has outgrown it. She is really enjoying shooting so I need to find a bow for her. I don't want to spend a fortune on a bow I will have to replace in a couple years or so. I would like to find one that will allow her to grow with it and still be a good bow for a few years as her draw length increases. Does one even exist?

Recommendations?

Thanks

Check out Ernie McKenzie's Sapphire Traditional bows. He's a super nice guy and he builds a "youth" longbow that is very functional and looks great. Last time I checked he was selling them for $75.

Is it September yet?!

I found the Bear L'il Kodiak to be the best when my kids reached that age....we would get them on the unmentionable auction site and a year later sell them there again and get a new one, like a low pound Grizzly. We would lose and make a buck here and there, but it never cost us a cent to have junior bows for the kids from about 9-13.

I just received a bow (longbow) for my son from Mike at Maddog Traditional archery. This bow is a custom made bow not a production line bow. I only gave $130 shipped to my door for the bow. The craftsmanship on the bow is top notch and Mike is a super guy to work with on making suggestions for what bow etc.

For me I consider these bows family heirlooms that I want to see handed down from my son to my grandson/granddaughter etc. So when he out grows this one (like others) I will stash it back for him to hand down later. I know the quality of this bow will make it last for that long and you just can't beat the $130 price for a brand new custom bow. If that is not the case for you I know you could sell the bow here for a good bit of what you paid for it.

Anyway, my suggestion is you give Mike a call or send him and email. He is listed in the sponsors dropdown.

Second vote for Mike. He made a Pup for my boy and it is top notch and was only $100. He also includes some arrows with the bows and like said he is a sponsor here.

I third the vote for Mike. He built my 9yr old son a 40#@28 Bamboo and cocobolo. Just give him a call, he is a great guy and very helpful.

I bought my two nine year old girls, the 3Rivers youth bow.
Figured they could share it, etc., and I'd buy a fancier one after I saw how it went, etc.

Glad I waited, as I thought for sure they'd go crazy to be out shooting with me, but it wasn't that much of a hit with them, and I think the youth "kit" cost around $50.

Something to think about...   good luck.

black rhino makes superior longbows for kids. I know you said recurve  but you might want to chechk them out.

Right handed.

I mentioned recurve because I wanted to be able to leave it strung for her to shoot when mom is around. I have always been told you can leave recurves strung but longbows should be unstrung every night or every couple days. This afternoon someone told me that is not the case if they are not all wood.

Lechwe

bump,

I'm calling on the bows mentioned but any other input is welcome.

How do you measure what weight bow to get?  I don't have access to a local shop to let her draw a bunch of bows.

Vermonster,
Sorry for the delayed response to your question but I recently found out that her 4th grade class is shooting wheelies for PE.  I asked her but she can't recall the weight.  She is 9 1/2 years old. What would you recommend?

Martin Prodigy is a nice bow. Just so happens my 9yo daughter has/shoots one. 20 @ somethingorother (cant remember, but the weight is just right). I made arrows from 1/4" ramin dowels and the light crimp/glue-on steel points. Got 1/4" nocks off of ****.

The Prodigy was $150, though.

Another vote for Mike at Maddog Archery.  My three sons (10, 8, 6) each shoot Maddog longbows.  They were a little over $100.  Nice quality bows, look and shoot great, and the boys love 'em.  I'll try to post a picture or two later today.
