Going on a moose hunt this fall thanks to being the lucky winners in a raffle and quite excited.  For those of you that have gone before, any advice you can offer?  What is the recommended draw weight and arrow weight (besides the heaviset bow you can shoot).  Might need to explain to the wife I need a new bow.  :)   Thanks for your help.

I asked this same question a couple weeks ago.
Good luck on your hunt.

who did you win it from and where are you headed?

I know people have done it with lighter equipment, but I think 60# and 650 grains is about minimum.  I took a nice Alaskan moose a few years ago with a 66# Robertson longbow and 725 grain birch arrow with 4-blade Zwickey Delta.  My hunting partner used a 70# R/D bow of our making, arrows of the same weight and a 2-blade Zwickey Delta.  He also took a nice bull.  I got full penetration on a quartering away shot; arrow just made it through the hide on the off side.  My partner's arrow zipped through his bull from broadside.  Landed somewhere in the river beyond and we never found it.  Good luck.

Orion can I ask who your outfitter was?

Orion

I floated the Moose John twice.  Jay Massey outfitted the first hunt.  Ernie Holland the second.  I believe Ernie is still outfitting the hunt.  Hope to do it once more before I get too old.

mid 50s should be just fine,  they are thick but not as tough as you would think, my father took one with a curve drawn to 51 with dare i say pretty light arrows and a 125 magnus, it died quick, not a pasthrough but full penetration.

A mooses's best defense, besides living in some nasty bogs, swamps, willows, etc, is his ears.  Like most other wild animals it is hard to fool their noses and their eyes are just poor to average, but if they are on the alert and you try to move in, they'll hear you for sure.  If you are in bear or wolf country and they hear something sneaking in on them, bye bye moose!
