Hi all,

Can anyone tell me whats the difference between padded Flemish strings and non-padded strings? If I wanted to make some padded strings how do I got about it?

Thanks in advance!

wingnut

Padded strings have extra strands added to the loops to fatten them and make them less likely to damage the bow.

you usually use padded strings when your strings are made from Fast Flight or a similar string material.  As wingnut said the loops are padded to lessen the chance of damage to your bow with the modern string materials.  Also, the serving can be padded to make it fit your nocks betters.  If you are using B-50 string material, then none of this is needed.

Hi Andy, thanks for the welcome!! Tell you what there is no finer bunch of people than trad archers, more like a community:)

Im from Bulys, still an awesome place to be depsite the problems. Its getting pretty tough now though, water is huge headache at the moment. Lots of rain but no chemicals to treat it...and of course no plans have been made to sort it out either! Exchange rate was 500,000 to 1 SA Rand when we left for South Africa on holiday a few weeks ago, will be way more than that now.

But we've still got sunshine, beer and Matopos so what more does a guy need:)

Are you from Zim Andy?

Cheers and hope your Xmas and New Years was a ripper!

I just wanted to toss one more TWIST into the flemish twist padded string thread.I would make a flemish string as thin as possible.Bow was a bit faster maybe!!I use 12 strands dacron on my 55# hunting bow.But I make a 3 bundle rather then 2 bundle. The 3 bundle is much rounder and thinner then the 2 bundle. But I've always padded the loops with like 4-6 extra strands to keep from damageing the limb tips on my older bows, but I also had to pad the serveing as my noc's were loss.Padding the loops will also kinda help quite the bow a little.Just wanted to add a little twist  !!!!!!!!!! bd

Thanks for the info real bowdoc, thats a "twist" worth turning!! Can you tell me how you measure out the extra strands you use to pad the loops and what method you use to add them into the string as you make it? Going to give this a try sometime.

Andy the biggest tradegy in Zim are the families and friends that have been scattered across the globe, really sad! Sorry to hear your family had to leave! The hunting situation is pretty dismal, lots of poaching going on. Even if you can find a place to hunt, I have a hard time bringing myself to shoot anything as their numbers are so depleted. Still there are some farms and reserves where guys are doing their best to keep the wildlife going and it will turn around in short order if (when...) things improve.

Cheers!

Put in the proper amount of back twist and a 2 bundle string will be just as round and thin as 3 bundles.  3 bundles will generally come out rounder if you don't put the back twist in though.

Along with "cushioning" the loops, padded loops generally quieten the string.
