elk huntin

After many years of dreaming about elk hunting and a few false starts, I finally packed up a truck with gear in 2001 and drove "out west" to an area I had never seen and bowhunted solo for a week. I sure got an education and made a lot of mistakes. But if I had an offer like Jbiorn's, I would have jumped all over it.

Turkeyslayer, your pastor must be a good prayer with an offer like jbiorne just gave you. I'm not sure you're understanding what he just did but after living in Montana for 4 years I can tell you that he's offering the goldmine and not the shaft. I had people from PA come out and hunt with me 3 of the 4 years I lived there and being able to just point them towards the elk meant hunting and not looking.

WOW!! This kind of response was unexpected to say the least!
This is shaping up to be more like a rendesvous than an elk camp.

After hunting public ground for 6 years and getting my clock cleaned for 3 of those years I will tell you ANY help from ANYBODY would have been helpful. I lucked out and met an old man that had been going to that area since 1963. I now have more spots to go to than time in a weeks hunt, and put 2 cow elk in the freezer since meeting 'Ol Jack.

Finding private ground to hunt is tough. Prepare for a big trespass fee. I am going on my first private ground hunt next year in Wyoming. I'm trading a whitetail hunt here in IL plus some serious cash to hunt big bulls on a ranch
that is leased to an outfitter. It is a one time deal because of the tag situation (start preference points now for Wyoming and see me in 3 years minimum ha).I worked out my own deal with the outfitter, and it still costs what airfare to South Africa would cost. I'd say do a little research on public ground hunting and OTC tags. You can do a drop camp with an outfitter in some pretty good areas for what it'd cost just to hunt a ranch with no tent, food, etc set-up for you. One I know of that is reasonable is "Budge's" in the flatops wilderness area in Colorado. Look in the RMEF mag or google it. GOOD LUCK! What you are trying to do for your pastor is very noble. You'll find something.

Hey Jeff...if you need another in your party in 2009 count me in. Never hunted Idaho, and I'd be tickled to get an invite! Will you hold my hand and keep those wolves off me? We don't have those critters in Colorado (yet).

hey jbiorne,i tried looking at that website but for some reason i couldnt get it to work for me.if anybody else knows about season dates,non-res-license fees,etc..... for idaho, i would appreciate that info.(oh by the way guys,i know a great offer when i see one,i was born at night,but it wasn't last night)heheheh...

Unfortunately, the '08 regs haven't been published yet----I am going to bend a friends ear tomorrow and see if he will divulge any info about the dates etc.

turkeyslayer,call idaho game and fish at 208-334-3746 and they'll send you the regs and applications needed,find out JBIORN's unit where he's directing you to and get an area forest map and a unit map,this is exactly what makes traditional bowhunters stand out from the crowd,we may not have much sense but we can have big hearts!THANKS JBIORN,your what makes the day a little easier to tolerate.

Turkeyslayer, do you have any pointers on turkey hunting around Cabot? I maybe able to help you get ready for an Elk hunt in Idaho.

Here is the skinny. I'm not a guide, I'm not an outfitter. I am just a hunter. And a poor hunter to boot.

I posted originally in response to turkeyslayer for a hunt with him and his pastor. That offer still stands, but I have been inundated with e-mail about the hunt.

Let's just say that the camp is full for this year. There are already plenty of guys wanting to come.

Know this. I hunt very high and I hump hard. I have been known to leave camp for 3 days on my own---so, that is how it is. I am there to hunt and am accustomed to hunting on my own, so this is all new to me.

My number is posted for the guys that are already in. There is a lot of work to do between now and hunting season.
