Go out about 9 hunt till early afternoon. Come in for a warm up go out and hunt the last 2 1/2 hours.

Yep....what Mickey said....I had one in bow range at 9:45 and two at 11 also in bow range...couldn't get a shot with my selfbow.

I busted two this morning at 9:45 again, and had a spike slip in on me at 11 again after I got set up at 10.

So, get some rest, and be on the stand by 9...and hunt till dark if you can. If you just have to take a break....make it from 2 till 4.

Good luck!

What is the thinking behind not getting out until 9:00?  Up our way the sunrise is 7:10am so shooting light begins around 6:40am.  Is the thinking that the deer will be active all night and come first light they will bed down for a bit to rest before getting active again around 9:00 or so?

Terry Green

Yes...exactly...the moon phase.

I should probably pay attention to it, but I have so few days to actually get out, that I just go when I can and see what I see.  My main goal is to keep my pants up so that the deer don't get spooked by my big bright moon.

:-D

Billy

I understand that too Kahn!!
Until I had my plans altered....I was planning on hunting this morning. And, because I saw that BIG buck yesterday morning I was looking for an edge...until plans changed!
So I, instead, sat in my kitchen watching the 3 acre city park. It's full of squirrels, rabbits and a few less chipmunks this year  ;)
Right at 9 this morning the edge of my yard came to life !!! Birds,2 rabbits, 6 squirels and 2-3 chipmunks came into our "wildlife kitchen".
Thanks again, guys.

don't forget the rising moon too...

When the moon is directly overhead(full) or directly under foot(dark) movement will best at mid-day! Shawn

The overhead/underfoot times change every day.

DIAMONDBACK

I agree with Terry and Shawn but the best time to kill a deer is when you are in the right place at the right time.Weather plays a big part too, shot a nice 8 pt turkey day at 4;15 pm,freezing rain that stung,he was out feeding.

Terry Green

Yep...correct Diamond...weather fronts can definitly over ride the moon.

Yes they do, but when it is directly full or vey, very close like the last few days and the next few days, be out there during mid-day. I also think ya should be out there as much as possible because it is hard to kill them sittin' on the couch. Shawn

My Dad's favorite saying is:  "Full moon, hunt at noon."  It has held true especially this time of year.
Always keep the wind in your face, and an arrow nocked.

As others have said..directly over or directly under.  Full moon is directly over at midnight and directly under at noon.  Thats the reason (or at least one of) why mid day hunting pays off on a full moon.

Most I can stay in a tree stand is about 6-7 hours. That said, if I'm plan on hunting from a tree, I'll subtract that amount of time from the sunset and get in the stand. It's usually round 10-11am till dark.
