I just bought a new long bow and was thinking about putting on horn tips, I have looked at some photos of them on line. I like the looks but don't know what advantages or disadvantages there are. Has enyone done this and what are your thoughts.

Tom Leemans

Are we talking horn overlays, or English longbow type?

As far as advantages, they hold up to FF string material great! Horn is lighter than wood as well, plus they look cool.

Don't really know of any disadvantages.

Disadvantage: smells like crap when you're sanding it!  :D

I was thinking about the English longbow type. I have some horns from a steer that a friend had raised for meat. I guess I was thinking of using them.

Well Stephen,

You are in the right state. I would contact John Strunk. He is the first name that comes to mind when English and Longbow are mentioned in the same sentence. Not to mention a great guy. Legendary.

Jeremy - You breathe in while you're sanding it?  :p

harper - Doesn't take a whole lot of skill. Helps to grind a drill bit to the same taper as the end of your bow. The (wooden) tip of your bow should extend past the string groove you file into the nock though.

Thanks for the comebacks I will try to get ahold of John Strunk. I use a resperator whenever I sand anything nasty, will plan on that ahead of time. Thanks.
