I would like to go caribou hunting in 2017 or 2018 and am looking for outfitter recommendations. I'm not particular about the subspecies but I would like to see the migration. I've read good things about Jack Hume Adventures but am having a hard time finding outfitters who cater to bowhunters; especially stickbow hunters.

Call Neil at Bowhunting Safari.. He has sent me on some awesome adventures with my stickbows... Tell him your a traditional bow hunter and he will take care of you.

Darren I went with Jack Hume back in 1997. There is plenty of cover to bowhunt. More than there was on Kodiak. I was the only one that did it with a bow in our group. But the week before a group from PA really nailed them. Set up on a crossing and get ready. Their walk is a fast gate. Hope all is going good Greg

There has been several Outfitters go out of business the last couple years and taken customers downpayment with them.  Do your research before you decide.  I want with Safari Nordic about 5 years ago and it was great but they are now done.

Have you considered a DIY hunt in AK on the haul road?

Heat

I haven't been but based on all the reviews I see Jack Hume is the only outfit I would even consider.

Darren, I had a great hunt in Québec back in 1992,and you'll find lots of guys that did good up there early 2000's and before, but based on what's happened to the herds there I'd go to AK on a drop camp hunt over Eastern Canada for sure.  I was up on the North Slope in '14 and saw thousands.  Planning to go back in '17.  I have a buddy up there that is making arrangements, but there are several air carriers that do Caribou on the NS that can get you in front of them.  Probably similar, or a bit less $ compared to Que. nowadays.

The Alaska hunt is enticing but also rather intimidating to me since I would be hunting in an area that I've never been to with no real guidance. Alaska is the Holy Grail of hunting opportunities but also an easy place to die in for a newbie. Can a non-resident buy OTC caribou tags? When I went on the AK Dept. of Fish and Game website it looked like all caribou tags for non-residents were draw only. Is that true?

Any guidance/suggestions for an AK trip would be greatly appreciated.

There are a lot of areas in Alaska where you can get an over the counter tag. If you are looking to do a fly out drop camp in Alaska you will need to book with the air service a year in advance as most of them just take a limited # of hunters and they get booked up pretty fast.

I used 40 Mile Air out of Tok Alaska. They are not guides but drop you where the bou are. No one for miles, they fly by once a day to see if you are still alive. It was a great trip.

I know a trad archer in Indiana that has been Blacktail and/or Caribou hunting 10 times on Kodiak Island.

Yes there are Grizzlies.

He likes the true DIY hunt and tents it alone.

His 15 yr old son went with him this year and got a nice one.

Weather is not always friendly.

PM me or email and I will five you his info.

He knows how to book the flights and all the regs.

Caribou on Kodiak are real hit or miss. The herd is small and moves around a lot. No migration pattern, just moves!
