I finally saw some deer today.  For the last few years the only time I saw deer was when I bumped them or they were napping on the side of the road, if you know what I mean.  I was starting to think I was doing something wrong.  Well this morning I got that feeling again.  You know the one where your heart feels like it'll explode.  Just as the sun was about to break the horizon I caught sight of a deer I thought to be a doe.  It had no visible points from what I could see.  I lost sight of it as it kept walking.  I tried my grunt tube and low and behold the deer turned and came right towards me.  Now starts the rapid, heavy, thumping of my heart.  It looked like the deer was feeding, I saw something coming out of it's mouth.  As it got closer it turns out it was a buck with about a 8-10" 2 point tine sticking out of the side of his head.  Now if you've seen Disney's "Open Season" you'll know what I mean when I started thinking to myself, "Half doe, half buck, I'm a duck."  Well, he turned to his right and offered no ethical shot.  Maybe tomorrow, but in the mean time, we'll call him Elliot.  If I'm able to kill this guy I'll for sure share the pictures.

Good luck!  Maybe his big brother will show up tomorrow.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

I had a little spike buck on Saturday who again showed me that even deer children are better at being deer than I am at being a predator.  I saw him at 70 yards, but he went into some thick dogwood/thornapple/raspberry and when I next saw him it was 40 feet away and below my right elbow - walking uphill towards my house!  Just seeing him was worth a lot of treesitting.  I drew and "took coup" but probably would have muffed the shot (brush between us and I was pretzled and could barely anchor) so he'll never be able to tell his deer buddies about the ackward man in the tree 'cause I don't believe he ever knew I was there.

God, I love deer.
