I have a whitetail hide that I would like to tan. I have never done this before , the hide is salted and roled up now what do I do next?

search 1 hide tanning
 search 2 hide tanning
 search 3 hide tanning

i don't have a clue about tanning but here are 3 threads to get you started.  There are several more pages of old threads if you use the search feature (click on search...type in hide tanning or tanning...and search only in powwow--you have to highlight that also or it will take forever to search)!  Hope this helps!  :)

Are you wanting to bark tan it or brain tan? If brain tanning commonly known as garment tanning or indian tanning, you'll need one brain,(cow brain works if you did not save the deer brain) and a number two wash tub or equivalent. Start by scraping the hide completely on both sides until the membrane on both sides are gone, you'll see little pore like holes on the hide. Wet scraping works well, I like mine slightly frozen. once scraped now its time to prep the brain solution. Puree your brains in a blender and add enough water in the tub to cover the hide pour in the brain solution. I smoke the raw hide prior to soaking this presaturates the hide making it soak up brain faster. Once you've soaked the hide you now work it over a break until dry this is the labor intincive part. Once dry you smoke the hide again until golden brown. the wood you use to smoke determines the color. Sounds hard but its just alot of work. Beutiful leather though. Ther are a couple of good books out there on the subject. Just look under braintan on the web.
Bowhunting is a passion, not an obsession. Its just hard for my wife to tell the difference sometimes.
