As far as I know there are only two bows like this one. I made both years ago to prove that we could be resourceful and build a survival bow just about anywhere.

This is made from two oak dowel rods glued inside a piece of pvc pipe and the ends tapered round much like an ELB.

It shoots fine at short distances. I am willing to bet it could be used to take small game.

nice. ive seen pvc used for kids bows and considered putting a smaller diameter inside a large diameter to see what itd turn out. not traditional by any means but sometimes we all need something to keep us amused and to test our ingenuity. whats your estimate of what that pulls as far as weight?

The oak gives it its backbone and I'd guess the draw weight to be 30+ lbs. I don't think of it as non-traditional so much as I think of it as a pvc sleeved oak ELB..lol

Cool bow! Reminds me of a story I read in an old 50's Archery Mag, The National Bowhunter; Chester Stevenson wrote about making a bow in the 1890's on his relatives farm one summer, as he had no archey equipment with him and he had plenty of time on his hands. He used 2 Hickory (or perhaps Ash, I'll have to dig out the magazine), shovel or pitchfork handles and an iron pipe or fitting as a sleeve/handle. If I remember, he said it was heavy, both in pull and carrying weight, #55 or #60, and he used it on game, including a coyote.

hahahaha!! I'm afraid it was too many years ago to remember how long it took to make it. I was just lucky I stumbled across it the other day or I might not have remembered it even existed still.

I got it out and found a string that fit it, so I strung it up to see if it would still shoot.

Wow! It did!! Not too shabby either.

nice, ive considered using oak dowels to make my son a bow after i got one to use for pegs that had some bend to it, while trying to get some of the bend out i found out it would take a bend pretty well without stressing too much.ive seen someone use a fiberglass driveway marker for a bow too, probably heavy 20 lb range if not light 30.

good job.   Also try using skinny dowels lashed together in bundles.  You can stagger them and make the bow bigger in the middle and taper at both ends by stagerring the placement of the sticks or dowels, even bamboo garden stakes.

Have to agree.  Mudd, you may want to change its name to "suburban stick" or something similar.  That would distance it from those urban folks that believe that food comes from a grocery store (and always comes in a box or wrapped in plastic and styrofoam).

I've got the other one that Mudd made. I'd never talk bad about a gift so, all I'll say is when you shoot this thing & you've got false teeth, keep your mouth close tight!

I thought I gave the other one to a kid. Guess I gave it to a kid at heart...lol
