anyone fill a ball with great stuff to use as a target.i was thinking like a kick ball

JRY309

I think Dick in Seattle made like a target ball to kick around and shoot.I got a good buy at a local dept store a square foam target that you kick and shoot at for $5.It's about a 12" square with rounded corners with target dots. It's alot of fun especially when you take turns with a buddy throwing it and shooting it before it stops,it bounces good being that it is square.

I sewed mine  (the pattern is on the Hill Longbowmen web site somewhere), but the Great Stuff should work well and be less work... for those that aren't antique sewing machine addicted.   I'd say pick a light weight kid's play ball rather than any kind of sports ball, though.   Go for a thin wall... and get a couple.   It might take a try or two before you get a feel for the right amount of foam to squirt in.   That stuff expands a lot!   Another, even simpler idea would be to just get a cube shaped cardboard box and fill it about 2/3 full of foam, leaving the top open.   It'll expand up over the top.  When it's dry, saw off the excess expansion to get your cube back, then saw off the corners to get an octa-whatever.   Put a loop of rope in the box when you squirt the foam in and you'll have a rope to throw it by.   Heck, might go out and do that myself later!

We made 12" balls of chicken wire. When you roll and shoot them they just stop. Of course the draw back is you have to be shooting from an elevated position so arrow will stick in the ground but that's how we deer hunt so it wasn't a factor. Pretty cheap and fun.

I filled a 2 liter pop bottle with Great Stuff. Was having fun shooting in the yard. Thought i would use blunts as to make the target last longer. The arrows just bounce off. Bent 2 alum. arrows after they bounced off and hit the garage. Have to be careful.

ya know, a one gallon plastic milk jug should work....kind of has that round/square shape, plus a built-in handle to tie a rope to....

I think I'll give that a shot....

we all should try some things and post some pictures

Be careful not to create a target that will move or bounce after it is hit. It could damage your arrow.

I use great stuff to repair 3D's and that stuff is great. One word of advice if you plan on filling a ball with this stuff. Make sure it is completely cured before you shoot at it. You do not want that stuff sticking to your arrows!!

JRY309, I bought two of those "Stumper" targets. Not only are they fun to shoot, they make a great cold-weather camp seat, tent seat, coffee table. I shot two blunts at one of them, and got two finger and thumb-sized holes in it, so I can pick it up like a bowling ball and fling or carry it.

Can't find them any more, which is a shame.

If you ever see a foam insulation truck around a construction site, they've been known to fill a TV box for me a time or two   :readit:

I just finished fixing up a new 3-d turkey with Great Stuff.  Can't claim credit, I got the idea from my friend Eric.  Took an old Feather-Flex hen decoy and shot the foam to it.  I mount it on an old arrow shaft which just sticks up into the foam.  Very affordable and a great target.

You do have to take you time filling things up with Great Stuff.  I wasted the first can I bought by just shooting the whole thing inside the turkey.  Takes some time and air to dry.  I spent about a week on the decoy, adding a little every day or two.

Here's my boy Josh trying to lay claim to a kill...    :D

Kasey, save your money on the great stuff. Take a milk jugg and stuff it full with all those grocery plastic bags real tight. Makes a great ariel target and a kick target! My son has been shooting one for over a month now. He likes kicking it and shooting. Have fun , Steve

rhinehart makes a great ball target. Its wheighted and flat on one side.Your arrows don't
get damaged and i don't think you can wear this thing out. Good luck. Greg

20 oz. bottle filled with foam.  It was almost two weeks before the foam hardened enough to shoot.  The foam needs air to cure.

I made one a couple weeks ago out of a old soccer ball and greatstuff. I shot a few holes in the first, stuck a piece of rope in one of them then shot in the great stuff. Works great! Kids love to throw it for me and let me know every time I miss. I had a can of the window and door sealer type laying around.Let it dry a day or two. I diden't and gooed up some arrows.I would probably make 2 or 3 at once so you don't wast any like me.But I wase't sure it would work. If I did it again I would put 5 holes in . One for a rope and 4 to shoot it in and expand out of. Good Luck!

I make mine out of basketballs. You can take an inflated basketball and shoot it a lot of times before it flatens out. Once the ball is flat and will not hold its shape any more I then stuff it with plastic grocery bags. It works great. My son will kick it around for me to shoot, sometimes. I like the youth basketballs they are a little smaller and cost less. I think I spent 6 bucks on mine over a year ago and still use it today. I have filled one with Great Stuff but it never seemed to cure. Everytime I shot it my arrows would come out sticky. m2c

I use those fake nerf soccer balls.  They last a while if you limit the use of broadheads.
