The plunger type. Last two I bought I was not happy with. I have some old mahogany and will try to make my own. If you have made one can you send a pic if it works well.
Thanks

What about a slate/pot strapped on your knee?

Primos makes the FREAK that does what BobW says...looks pretty slick!

the "Freak" by primos is great!!  Not a new thing idea been around a while but the Primos team profected it.  I have used it to call all kinds of turkey's in, but with a bow, it is a far better idea to have a diaphram call in to pull the gobbler in.

If you are looking for a push pin type call, I recommend the slate box by Keowee calls.  It is far better than most I have heard.

I tried a diaphram call about 10 yrs ago(I think).
Made me gag so much I spit it out the window on the way home from wally world. I killed a nice tom last yr with a quaker boy. my young son took it out side and left it in the rain for a week and it fell apart.....I bought a hs strut from wally world yesterday....took it back today. I might try a diaphram again. There are so many styles.double reed , triple reed, on and on.  What is the best all around? I use a box call till they start comming in.

One thing you can do on the box call is to mount a couple of pegs on the bottom and stick it in the ground next to you and then you can run it with one hand.  Make sure you mount the pegs out on the end where the end blocks are so you don't affect the sound chamber.

You can also pinch it in the crook of the back of your knee and hold it there for one hand use.  If you put a strip of rubber inner tube or rubber bands around your glass/slate call you can do the same there too.

The hurdle with the mouth call can be overcome too, if you give it time.  You will be glad you did when the thing starts working for you.  Get a double reed or so that is cut (Cutter, Split-V...).  When the reed is cut it takes less air and manipulation to get the sounds to come out.  An uncut reed takes more air to get the reed moving and is harder to start with contrary to popular belief. Like a bed sheet on a close line.  If the wind blows it takes more wind to move it as a whole than it would if you had cut lines in it.  The smaller parts move more freely.

A wingbone call can be used with just one hand as well.  It provides a different tone that is probably not heard too often in most woods and call shy birds respond to it readily.

That may be more info that you want, but maybe it will help.

Have a good hunt with whatever call you choose.

The slayes strapped to your leg and some good push button calls work great they may have to be tuned, the Egg frm MAD calls is a good one, I love the art of turkey calling, start with a plain 2 reed call with no cuts on the reeds, if you yend to gag you might want to buy the youth size, or a sonic dome. You will always kill more birds knowing everything about them, and what they do every day, I have had only a hand full of birds I had to put the hard calling on, with all the people that think they can call now, more is less it's about the cadience and the volume you use more than sounding perfect. I have a over kill turkey vest with over 30 calls of every type you can think of, just in case.Chris

The "Squeeze O' Matic" from Protektor Model.  Years ago, Protektor bought the rights to makes this call from PA-based Smith Game Calls.

Still one of the best sounding plunger-style calls on the market--and surprisingly little known because the company doesn't do much advertising.
