thinking of changing my hunting area closer to home this year. does anyone have any tips on where to start, good locations to hunt here?

I would start with contacting the Colorado wildlife dept. I guess it depends also what you are hunting.

i usually hunt on the western slope and thought i'd try somewhere different this year.
also, thought maybe this would narrow my scouting down a bit.

If you come to the CBA banquet in Col. Springs in March, between the vendors and members you may get some direction and info.

What are you hunting? If it's bighorns and you are in top shape, this is the place. For elk and deer, etc., you'll fine as many or more in far easier terrain. Have you ever been near Crestone and looked up? Geeze! I wish I had done the sheep hunt there when I was younger and dumber (or at least younger) but have never thought of the area for anything else ... unless, of course, I lived there. Backyard hunting is often the very best hunting. You need to give folks more info if you want more specific suggestions. Go get 'em!

i would be hunting elk and when i can get a tag, mule deer. but my main focus is on elk.
Dave, i know what ya mean, it's some rough country, but it's only about an hour away, vs. the 3 1/2 hours to where i normally hunt.

I used to live just east of the range near Stonewall, a few miles N of the NM / CO border.  Beautiful country and lots of deer/elk but a lot of it is private land where you can hunt as long as you have the $$.  Public land is hard to tell from private....be careful.

stonewall is a little too far south, i'm about 40 miles due west of pueblo,co.

Man, I wish I only had to drive 3 1/2 hours to hunt elk.  Takes us about 20 or so.

have you ever looked at the wet mountain area? I  recall it is draw for elk but when I last hunted it was underscribed. Since it is draw it has limited # of hunters. Once you figured out where they were ( along the road edges) and got away from them I saw lots of elk.

i have hunted there some, but elk are not in very good numbers there.

Never hunted but hiked the Sangres in the Crestone area. Beautiful but rugged country.

Try the Rio Grande Reservoir and Lost Trail (or Lost Creek) areas.  I backpack guided there in the summers during the 80's.  Rough is a relative term but appropriate.

Weminuche Pass and Squaw Trails start at the Reservoir.  Squaw is flatter and a little lower but Weminuche is prettier IMO.

I apologize for the politically incorrect trail name.  i didn't choose it...

BTW - there are tons of horse packing outfits in and around Creede.  They will have plenty of info to share.  Just call them up.
