I overheard this conversation between a Wal Mart sporting goods employee and a customer:

Customer: "Are these arrows any good?"

Wal Mart employee: "Yeah, I killed two dogs with one and it ain't bent or nothin'!"

I wish I had not heard that.

From the responses to my last comment...I also hate to hear " I get as many doe tags as I can and try to fill them". I'm sure the folks who now hunt all of deer season in Pa. and see nary a tail and nary a track think this is a great idea.
I also hate to hear "Too many deer cause our car insurance to go up,and cause crossbows in archery season, and cause blue tongue disease". Car insurance is so high because there are so many careless drivers who can't drive...Crossbows are in archery season because the crossbow companies smelled the money from hunters who want it easier and easier and easier...and when the deer were so "overpopulated" in the 80's and 90's how come you never heard of Blue Tongue Disease??
I can tell you this...As a high school teacher I see the interest from youngsters toward hunting fading each year...Why???  A big part is because the guys who kill all the does have left kids who might show some interest in hunting with few deer to see and they get bored.Just today I heard a kid say.."I was going to go bowhunting last Saturday but I haven't seen a single deer yet. I went fishing." Kids don't need Huge Bucks to peak their interest...but they do need to see deer. Show the younger ones nothing, bore them, and you've lost them for good.Too many other things out there to capture their interest. Just like starting a youngster fishing...Take him to a bluegill pond, let him have a ball and he's hooked for life. Same with hunting. Better let him at least see deer. If he catches nothing or sees nothing he will give it up!

Yeah, I'm sure.

The worst part was that there were other customers within earshot that looked how I felt.

High tech has hijacked modern archery I'm afraid.  It's an arms race and the young who are being drawn into archery now are buying it hook line and sinker. It's what they see on TV, what they read about in Field and Stream, and what they see in the archery shops.

I hate to hear "I'm getting 350 feet per second out of my bow."

Quotes from my archery shop...

"You sure these arrows will fly straight out of my bow?"

"What do you mean I have to sharpen these Zwickeys, can't I hunt with them like this?"

"Can I just buy 2 of those custom arrows out of that dozen?"

"Can I shoot my compound arrows off this new recurve?"

"I WHACKED a big doe last night, right in the shoulder. She ran off....we never found her. She'll be OK...I missed the vitals."
"Neal...is this heaven?" "No Piute but we are dam close". Top of the Mtn in Medicine Bow Nat Forest.

Turkey-duke .  its funny,

"We've been hunting hard here in Illinois - its the second day of the hunt..."

Almost assuredly they were sitting in a treestand.  Now, not putting down the fact that they may have spent a long time in the tree...... what is so hard about that ?  We hunted hard.....  ????

If a hunter around here refuses to shoot does and the landowner/farmer finds out, their hunting rights are usually terminated.

Hate to hear:

"hit him perfect in both lungs, then he ran off leaving no blood"

"you expect to kill a bear with that bow?"

"carbon arrows are traditional; because there is epoxy in your bow riser"...

ChuckC,

Yup, that's what Im talkin about.  Sitting in a stand that their guide hung with no clue as to how to really get out and hunt. I've got a feeling that far fewer deer would be killed if all those "expert" hunters we have on TV had to be completely self-guided.

Question: How can you shoot those cute deer?
Answer:  Sight alignment and trigger control works every time!

What my friend said to a lady after he shot one with his smoke pole.

FYI, In MI in 2007 over 60,000 deer were killed by car and we fall behind PA in the stats.   I agree about careless drivers but I used to work for an insurance company, I can guarantee that these numbers are not ignored by an actuary.

I don't disagree with you abou the car insurance.  I see the resutls and take the reports weekly.  I was encouraging him to speak with a wildlife biologist about deer management.
