Hello,

I'm looking to buy a Helle knive for my
brother-in-law who got me started in hunting.
(I think I may even be able to pry the compound out of his hands eventually too!!. I'v already got him down to one pin on his sight)
I just want to say thanks with a nice knife.

I want to give him a general all purpose knife but more for use in field dressing and skinning. I've been looking at few of the Helle knives, but need some direction. Here is the list. Can someone point me toward a good fit?

Godbit
Harmoni
Harmoni Plus
Harding
Trophy

Also, for sharpening these knives, will the KME sharpening system be recommended?
My brother-in-law has taken a real liking to one of the electic sharpeners, the Presto 2 stage. I'm afraid that it will just trash the blade. I've used it once or twice with some of his blades. There are sparks flying and vibrations all over the place. You can tell that the blades are being "eaten" more than sharpened. I just don't want to give him a good knife and then just trash it.

Thanks for the help,

I like all those knives and there are thankfully much more knowledgeable knife afficionados than me who will respond, but have you considered the Fjellmann(sp)? My personal favorite Helle but of course everyone has an opinion.

I'll throw another curve.  I like the Millstone (though you won't get me to spell the Helle name).  Smaller and thinner blade.  Just my taste.  As Curveman said, each his own.

As to the sharpening, yeah, you need to convince him of the evil in his ways....

Good luck.  any Helle Knife is a good one.  He's a lucky guy.  Nice gift.

I skinned 3 good size black bears with my helle (harding) and it still shaves hair of my arms. A great knife. I think the harding is a good all around blade.

I skinned the majority of not one, but two moose in 2006 with my Polar blade. It worked very well.

Red Boar

I have the FJELLKNIVEN...great all-around knife.

I liked my Helle Fire so much I gave it to a friend (Alex) and bought another ... for $1,000 (by joining as a life BHA member). It did three elk last fall and one so far this year. I like the sturdy blade which is shorter than the handle for good leverage. dave
