I just picked up some axis 500s from a fellow TGer for my new to me widow.  I wanted something with a thin shaft and I'd like to play my hand at a heavy FOC for these.

My problem is I only shoot cedars and I know nothing about shooting/tuning carbons.

So Ill leave it up to the pro's around here to point me in the right directions.

I'm shooting a BW MA 50@28 drawing 27" and id like the arrows to be 28 1/2 inch like the rest of my shafts just b/c I gap and it will be easier to be consistant witht he arrows being the same length.

As stated before I'd like to shoot a very heavy point...I've ordered some 100g brass inserts to put it there.

I was thinking of just throwing a bunch of different weight points shooting em and find what flys best.

So what should I do?

The 500's with a 100gr insert may not be stiff enough for you.

With a regular insert they are weak out of my 49@29 Bob Lee.

i shot a few 400s and those were to stiff

Shoot a bare-shaft and fletched-shaft, same length and point-weight...

What you are looking for is for the point of the bare-shaft and fletched-shaft to be impact at, or near, the same spot.  If the bare-shaft is impacting to the right of the fletched arrow then they are too weak, to the left and they are too stiff.  (for a right handed shooter)

It would be good to have some different weight inserts and point on hand too.

I would be surprised if you are able to shoot the 500's with much point weight up front.

I shoot axis 500's, I have two wraps on them, 5 in. feathers three fleched, 125 gr Stanger, total arrow weight 435 gr.

And I shoot 43# and also 45#, and they're a little light for them.  I will be increasing arrow weight, or changing to a different arrow.

I don't know if you could shoot the axis 400.  The 400 to Little stiff.  Carbon express 250 may be a better choice.  It just depends on what you put up front, now you could possibly go with the axis for hundreds if you put 175 gr. or more up front.

i shoot a similar set-up and draw length.  i use the 500's w/ a 150gr head and they fly real well. 175gr head flies good too but much more than that and it is too weak

It will probably shoot fine with just the insert.    I believe the 400 would be a better match if you are planning on loading the front.The other option would be to pull off the spider web and build out you riser enough so you could shoot a weaker arrow.jmo

well then looks like im gonna have to scrap the 500s and try and get ahold of some 400s eh?

I shoot 500's out of bows from 48-52@28 w/o any problems, granted my arrows are a little longer than yours.  You can get by with 3" feathers on small carbons like these as well.  I've got 125gr up front and get great penetration.

400'S TO STIFF.I SHOOT 400'S FROM MY 6OLBS @27'' HABU W/ A 200GR POINT.BARESHAFTS GREAT OUT TO 40RDS.

i shoot 400 axis 29 1/2 in with 100gr brass insert with 145 tip out of 52 lb t/d boblee i draw 28 1/2 wieght is 545gr shoot great four me

I have been shooting the exact arrow set up including the 100 grain insert with a 150 head total 250 up front out of a 50lb bow for three years with a perfect bare shaft result.If you go with the 400 you could be over spined or border line with no room to add weight up front which is necessary for adequate hunting weight.I bet the 500 works for you. good luck

I am shooting some beman mfx 500 out of a 54@30" mohawk with 250 grain feild points and standard inserts.  They shoot like darts.  I have found that with the hit inserts being farther in the shaft it does not effect the spine as much to add the brass inserts.  Your mileage may very but I think they will work fine for you.

thanks for the input guys...how would i go about removing the standard inserts in there now to put the brass ones in?

I forget the size of the thread in those inserts but take one to the hardware store and by a brass screw 2 or 3 inches long heat it up and screw it in the insert using a pair of pliars.should pull out.its handy to have a cup of water near by to cool things off with.When replacing the weighted insert use amber glue.clean the inside of the shaft with a 22 cal brush and rinse with water or q tip.when you install the insert dip it the water to set it and col the shaft off. hope this helps good luck.these arrows should work for you.

before you take all the standard inserts out, try a 200 grain tip and see how they fly. I shoot 46-47 lbs at 28" draw and my axis 500's are cut right around 29".with standard insert and 200 grain tips, I've also got some that are the same length with 100 grain inserts and 200 grain tips and they fly great also. I've noticed that for me anyhow, length has more bearing on spine than tip weight. might not make sense...but that's been my findings

Tom send me your address i'll mail you a 175, 210,250 grain screw in. Try them see what happens.Tom I can send you a Gold Tip 35/55 28"s and a Vapor Carbonwood 3000 28"s. My Horne's Traditionalist shoots the 35/55 Gold tips [4 -4" feathers] With 250 grain screw in field point like a lazer guided rocket. It's 50#s at my 27"s.It likes the Vapors too.My Mohawk is 46#s at my 27" draw she likes the 35/55's too. Closer to your 47#s at your 27" draw.

I'd sure try them with the standard insert and 175-200 up front... Start with the shaft a bit long, say 30" and trim back 1/4" at a time.. I doubt an inch longer arrow would mess up your gap much if at all..

BTW, you can trim length from the back end since the inserts are already glued in ..

You'd be surprised how much that one inch changes everything when it comes to gap LOL...but yea I'm gonna try and play with them and see if I can get them to fly.  If need be I'll just have to adjust my shooting...these are strictly for pig hunting so I wont be using these on a regular.
