I'm not really concerned about speed in any significant way to be honest, if it was an issue I would probably shoot a compound. However fast the arrows going as long as I hit what I shoot at and put it down quickly I'm content. If the bow is a bit faster but sounds like a screen door slamming when I drop the string where's the fun in that?

In the world of trad there's always trade offs to be made, as a result I just pick what's fun to shoot and enjoy myself.

Same here, I will say though, an arrow going 175 will not hit the same unforeseen overhead branch as one going 150. I have seen arrows going 185 still hit 'em, and in that case I wanted 200. but man hauling back 85# seems detrimental to my health.   :saywhat:

I am with Rossco, I am not real concerned with arrow speed.  I hunt Deer and smaller animals.  My wood arrows average around 580 grains and with 125 up front they do not arch too bad and seem to still go through critters nicely.  I shoot very mold R/D bows or Hill style.  Either way, I look for quiet first, speed second.  I do not think any of my bows are out and out screamers, but they go fast enough to kill.  My Shelton is pretty fast and shoots arrows well between 9 and 11 gpp.

I think I am in the high 160's or low 170's (fps), but the deer do not seem to care.  Just my thoughts on matter.

Can you all guess when the first canoe race happened? The day they built the second canoe. My problem is if I have a real clean, gentle in the hand and fast shooting bow, then if I get a bow that is not clean, gentle and fast that is about the same poundage, in short time that slow rough shooting bow will be slimmer, lighter pulling, and hopefully gentle in the hand and faster for its poundage, but if the bow gains accuracy and is more pleasant to shoot I am happy, regardless of the speed.. On the other hand, my old Pete George yew was never as fast as my Schulz Legend,(no other Hill style longbow is as fast at my draw), but it is still a great shooting bow and I have never been tempted to change it. When we compared the Pete George yews to my Schulz, my son declared that they were slowing down. At 9 grains per pound and  hitting the 180s for me and a bit more with same arrows with his 28" draw, I think they are doing fine. I have another bow that 15 fps slower, a few pounds lighter, but it is a perfect shooting bow and I will not change it. Enough speed is enough and the old shoot under the twig argument can be made, I suppose the old lob it over the twig argument has its place as well.

Tech details aside, I do notice that the 125g tipped shafts have an over all more consistent kill hit than the 160g tips. Is it because the 4fps flattens the trajectory a smidge for less correction inside 50yds? Yup.
There is a reason those Old Timers liked these set-ups, and I would be willing to bet that it was not because they were harder to shoot.   :saywhat:

Only last year did I finally start shooting above 8.3 grains per pound.

I finally went to ash shafts, and for my 75-pound bows, they come in at 9.6 to 10 grains per pound.

That fits the formula well, but more importantly, they are super-forgiving arrows. I like that.

Yes, I can shoot 600 to 625-grain arrows faster and flatter, but I'll take the 10-grains-per-pound, higher-forgiveness arrows all day long!

725 to 750 grains per inch at 75 pounds sure shoots sweet!

I imagine 10-grains per pound at any draw weight is just as sweet.

I think 10 grains of arrow per pound of draw weight is how you spell "SWEET SPOT!"

Nothing like the 50yd shot. With similar gpp, Rik, that is my approx "point on" with my 26.5" draw.

Rossco7002

I agree with Rik, I find arrows in the. 10-11 gpp range much more forgiving of my (multiple) form and shooting errors. Lol

Also, with a large jump in mass such as that, and from a stout bow,  are you noticing any appreciable penetration increases? Man 600g out of a 75# is no slouch.

Just got back from a pig hunt. Didn't see a pig but I saw alot of activity. Just got to figure out what time they are comming out. Good grief as I'm writing this I just noticed thereis a bat flying around in this house!

MikeNova

Well bat problem is now solved but I confess I didn't use a hill bow. More like a fire rake

ChrisM

Well I am sure your wife is happy you weren't trying arial shots in the house   :knothead:

Took my wesley out for its paces and I am truley impressed it cast a 540gn arrow as fast as my recurve of a few pounds lighter.  Figure It is good to go for deer as I have shot through several deer with that one.  Really like the B50 string just got to get all of the stretch out.  Its my first time with that type of string.  I did initial stretching like I do with FF and I had to raise the BH up 1/2 inch 3 times.  How long before it stops movin?
