Hey Gang-

Today Jesus(RushLush) came over to my house. We spent sometime tuning up his bow. We found the best spine and length arrow for his setup.

Jesus has been shooting for just a short time but has very good form. I video taped his shooting so he can see himself shoot.

Jesus has the Howard Hill "Robin Hood" bow, this was my first time shooting a stringfollow bow. I understand why Howard said, "a stringfollow bow was the best shooting bow." The bow was very smooth after the release, there was no jarring effect.

Got my new big shot glove yestarday and let me tell ya it is nice.  The first thing that I noticed is the string noise i have been fighting on my wesley was gone.  Now i know what a quiet hill sounds like, drawing the arrow is louder than the shot:)

Chris-
When I shoot with a tab I get a deeper hook than with a Hill glove. The big shot looks like it fits snug and the finger stalls look thin. Are you able to get a deep hook with no problem?

Darren if you mean deep hook by holding the string in the first joint and not on the fingertips...yes all big shot/crossovers are designed to hold the string in the first finger joint.

tradlongbow

Nate-

Are the stalls are thinner than a Hill glove? Remember Hill used to cut the ends of his stalls to feel his anchoring point. This is the same problem I have with the thick stalls.

The bigshot is thinner for string feel...the crossover has a thicker feel like the hillstyle but the ends of the stall are thin nylon so you can feel your anchor/face

ChrisM

The tip is only nylon so the feel through it is nice, about like the tip of a damascus glove.  The finger stalls hold the sting in the nuckle joint just right with protection and a little bit of bind that I couldn't get with a hill style glove. It is a great spot between the Hill glove and a damascus style.

I use a deep hook no matter what finger protection I am using when shooting any of my Hill or Hill style bows.

I used to believe that a deep hook would make for a slower and noisier release but I was proven wrong by Bill Matlock.

I was in one of Bill's seminars years ago when he stated that you would get a much better release with a deep hook and that is would actually increase the speed.

After class I being a good Missourian challenged Bill to prove his statement to me.(He did)

He set up a chronograph and had me shoot my bow through it as I normally shoot, then he took my bow and shot it 12 feet faster than I did.

I wasn't as impressed by that as I was when he showed me how to grab my string with a deep hook and within 3 shots I was consistently shooting 10 ft faster and quieter than I got from shooting my then normal hook.

I could've really cared less about the increased speed but the "quiet" is a different story.

The Schulz video helped bring my draw and anchor closer to what works for me. The double anchor gets me lined up the most consistently for my shot each and every time.

Sorry to be so long winded but I didn't know of a better way of showing what it's like to "eat crow" than the telling of it.

I don't suppose I'm the only one, but, when I try that "thumb knuckle" behind the jaw bone, my index finger is just on the zygomatic arch, the one bony point right under the eye, seems kind of high. When I watch J. Schulz on video display this, his index finger is much lower on his face and more in line with his upper lip.  Roll with it do I ???

tradlongbow

Jesse-

When I place my thumb knuckle behind my jaw bone my hand is much lower than yours. Atleast it looks that way from your pic. It may have to do with different head shapes.

Are you  here?

Or are you here?

Mudd

If I over think it as I did when I 1st tried it... well it just didn't feel right but I decided to stop thinking and just let the bow direct me...well.. it works like a dream for me.

I am locked down and in line with each and every shot.

I may be fooling myself but I seem to be able to reproduce the same effect each time.

I think the same would be true no matter which picture you chose.

After about a dozen or so shots using the same technique  your groups should come together.

This is just my opinion and it may work differently for you.

I do know I had a great time getting here and look forward to continuing my journey.

Overspined

Don't worry about the thumb behind your ear, just developing a consistent anchor with good eye alignment is key, second anchors are icing on the cake.  Some get worse arrow flight with more pressure or "solid" anchors. It doesn't have to be smashed into your face.  Fred Asbell talks a lot about anchoring in his book(s) and it all seems to work out as he states. He also discusses not shying away from the deep hook.

The first pic looks more like it because my middle finger meets the corner of my mouth.

Overspined

I used to use the middle finger in corner of mouth, but was advised by a very knowledgeable hill guy that I should try index finger in corner of mouth. I like it and it promotes using back muscles for drawing more, yup that little change of a finger width...

tradlongbow

The way I was taught is to bring the middle finger to the corner on the mouth because it brings the arrow closer to eye.

Just attempted to do it with the thumb knuckle behind the jaw bone. Took a few shots to get it down. Once I did I shot just fine. One thing I noticed is that the arrow line at full draw was seemingly more "out to the side" than "in line" with my face, but, and this is one of those big ones, the "tip" of the arrow was pointing on target. What it looked like was this.

Basically gets the shaft from under your eye, by getting the rear end out of your peripheral view so that you only see the front end in your split vision.
