60-65.  The nock groove might fit your string.       I already am thinking of the next set.  I like the way the self nocks feel on the string and the glove already.

Just curious Ray what spine do you shoot out that Sunset Hill?

If you haven't  tried some yet  try barrel tapered shafts my preference on fletching is low profile banana cut feathers
But the shaft performance is amazing like shooting darts

Dragonheart, these arrows look great!!

Dragon, buddy, I think perhaps that you put a lot of really nice work in those arrows for naught. You may have second thoughts about messing them up when the time to kill a pig arrives. Perhaps they would see better use here in Iowa, I have a couple of bows that they would fly real nice out of and since I don't have so much heart invested in them, I could find out how effective they would be for you. They look really classy.

60 - 65# spine, Perfect!        :D

That is what I shoot.  A little under 27" bop and 160 (preferred) or 145 grain points.  Both hit the same place.  I have been shooting some tapered and some barrelled shafts with this set up with a 12 strand D-97 string - no silencers needed.

50 - 55, 125 grain point. Dynamic spine 57(stu miller). Draw 28#53. For me great arrow flight.

Found this out by bare shaft testing a gt tradtional and after straight flight it had a dynamic sprine of 57. When i filled our the data of the bow it gave me a to low spine there for I bare shaft. It works great for me but for others maybe not.

I can live with breaking one in Mr. Piggy!  The self nock are more work, but they appear to be very strong.  Really like the feel of them on the string.  I was reading that Jay Massey really liked them and did not break them often.  These have that "ol school" look to me.

I like an index, I am used to drawing from a back quiver and the small brass tacks work out great as a nock locator.  My next batch will have some color!

Ray:  I am shooting 26.75" arrow back of BH, 60# @ 26", 225 grain BH Tuffhead, B-50 (no silencers), Hill Big Five.  These are straight shafts, no taper.  Need to really shoot them more and see if spine is right.

So you about 10 pounds over bow weight with variables of: skinny string (12 strand vs B-50 as standard) weakens/160 instead of 125 standard point weakens, and 27" arrow one inch less standard 28" stiffins.  Those non-stretch strings require more spine in an arrow that is for sure.

Legendstick:  What bow?  how long is arrow back of point to point?  So in wood you shoot 57# correct?

Dragonheart 26" or there abouts is my draw that I verified through videoing myself shooting with a marked shaft.  I bought these shaft with intentions of shooting a 160 gn Hill broadhead.  Now when it was weighed it was at Wulfs and they did it behind the counter so that may be wrong.

Chris,
I am right just shy of 26" also.  I weighed my big five, it is marked 62# @ 26", but it is really 60# @ 26".  I determined my draw by video and the bend in my bow arm, and low and back bow shoulder.

Last summer video really taught me about what the low back shoulder feels like.  I was shooting very extended in the past.  So much that the bent arm felt "really bent!".  Now that part of my form is far more automatic, I just swing up with bend and it feels unnatural to extend.

Here are two OLDER photos from circa year 2000-2001.  You can see how extended my bow arm, and rigid it is.  CAN you say static form!  I was shooting only 47# bow at my draw and was far more extended.

Look how up my bow shoulder is.  I would overdraw and then "sink" into anchor and hold.  I would say that is NOT AN EXAMPLE OF HILL STYLE FORM!

Your front shoulder looks like what mine was doing with my recurves.  When I started with a longbow this summer the first thing that I had to do was concentrate on bringing my front shoulder down and rotating my arm to where my elbow was pointing more downward. The difference was amazing.

On another note are you planning to attend chester this year?
Gods greatest command:  Love your neighbor as you love yourself.

dragonheart

I did the same on the shoulder and you ain't kidding brother, What a DIFFERENCE!  I felt like I was 16 again shooting that Tim Meigs.  You have the control, no shock, and an real feeling of bone to bow in the bowhand.  Heeling the bow  with the low and back bow shoulder allowed me to also relax my grip some, whish leads to a more relaxed state of shooting.  I will get some photos of a "today" shot of the form and post later.  Chester is a YES for me.  My 9 yoa daughter is shooting her Hill Cub.  It is really cool to see her "Hill" form progress.
Longbows & Short Shots

I get a stiff neck just looking at that bottom photo of you. That couldn't have been doing any favors for your bow shoulder either.  Of course, when I saw a photo of me with my black widow target bow, years ago. I could not believe how much it looked like I was trying fall over away from the bow. But by golly i had a 29 inch draw and that's all that mattered, right?

dragonheart

Remember the old "power archery" form?

The yellow fletch arrows in the photos, I believe were 28 1/2" to the back of the point.  the orange and white is 29" BOP I believe.

So, I was shooting about 27 1/2" draw back then.  I shoot 25 7/8-26" today, far more comfortable, relaxed.

Legendstick: What bow? how long is arrow back of point to point? So in wood you shoot 57# correct?

It is a legendstick(tembo made by Craig for the europeen market) 53#28 stringfollow fastflight black backing and white facing. One year old.

The spine in wood is 50 - 55 static spine. The back off point are in between 27.9 inch to 29 inch due the GPI off the german pine. Lighter then cedar. Cedar in good quality is difficult to buy here in the Netherlands.

The dynamic spine with arrow lenght(GPI) and
arrow  point(125 grain) is 57 in stu miller. But more important de weight is within 10 grains from each other.

Makes this me a better shooter? Probbaly not but its fun for me to do(most important). This is my fist set that a make like this and in the weekend a  3d. To proove off it helped. In the garden at 12 yards the fly well in a small group.

Nate Steen .

Jeff,

looking at that form makes me think 'target archery'....looking at pics of Hill and Schulz make me think 'hunting archery'......

Rik

. . . speaking of hunting, how are the jackrabbits doing in your neck of the woods this year Nate?

Nate Steen .

what jackrabbits?  haven't seen squat this year.  but then it's either rained or snowed for the month of Jan.  Not too many clear days.  And I'm buried in the bowshop if I'm not at work...

spring bear season can't come soon enough for me.

You guys probably don't know this but Dreagonheart (Jeff Schulz ) is one of the best shooters in the country. He won the Texas State Longbow Championship two years in a row and is always at the top two or three. Hell of a shooter as well  as a super nice young man. ( jeff, that should be worth a steak dinner or at least a hamburger.)
