I tried arrows weighing from 475 grains up to 675 grains, carbon, aluminum, cedar and ash. Again, not much difference. I know the string is worn but I do not know what the material is.
The string can make a HUGE difference. My Mahaska was a real thumper too until I made a skinny D97 string with padded loops for it. Now it's dead in the hand and a joy to shoot.

I didn't notice much difference with the arrow weights either, much to my disappointment. Give Josh or Chad a shout and have them make you a new string, of if you are like me, make yourself one.

If that doesn't do the trick, I'd wonder if the bow is tillered for one type of draw and you use another (3 under vs. split). At that point I guess I'd give Craig at Howard Hill Archery a call and see what he recommends.

I wondered about the string but I didn't know it could make that big of a difference.

How old is that halfbreed, you say it has a worn string. I would be curious to see photos of the bow unloaded from the side and straight at the back all the way to the tips and then loaded or better yet drawn, square from the side.

khardrunner

I have some of those pics and will have my dad take some more. He will have the bow for the next couple of weeks to try his hand at it.

I think it's from 2006

Sweet looking bow Stiks n Strings!!

I put a 10 strand FF string with padded loops on my Hill Tembo and it did greatly reduce hand shock, as opposed to the B-50.

I bought this piece of leather(alligator) last year from a fella in Tennesse for a dollar. I thought it would look nice as a grip, so I changed it today. It feels good too.

Khardrunner, that bow looks like a standard Hill.  My guess is you aren't gripping the bow correctly, or at least not the way the bow likes. If you haven't done so, it's a good idea to re-read the posts on grip, and try a few different methods the hill shooters use. I have never shot a Hill bow from HHA in a standard make that was more than a touch thumpy. Many people start by getting too far into the grip. Try rotating your hand a touch outside and shoot a few, then a bit more and shoot some more. You should find the sweet spot. Disregard this if you have exhausted this as a possibility, but Hill bows shouldn't hurt. They do take a little getting used to and everyone's hand is different, so your sweet spot grip may be different than others.  Just a thought.

I don't choose the deer, the deer chooses me.

Thanks overspined. I did play around with the grip quite a bit and there was no sweet spot to be found. I think I need to continue to work with that though. I grew up shooting hill style, but that was a while ago with a much smaller bow. I had a Tembo for a couple years not too long ago, but I had issues with the small grip and traded it this past spring. It never thumped me like this one does. I'll have to keep playing with it.

Darren, I like that alligator skin grip. Definately adds a touch of personalization to the bow.

I just replaced my first grip on one of my longbows. Bought a 90# howatt hill style longbow as an exercise bow. It came without a grip or strikeplate. Didn't plan to shoot it but the itch consumed me. Used a piece of tanned deer hide I purchased from Wissler on TG. Dyed the leather black, affixed with Barge Cement and used 70# sinew for the lacing.

Bow is very fast but not very smooth, then again I only shot it a few times, waiting on a new string as the one on the bow makes me a bit nervous.

tradlongbow

Steve-

Your regrip looks good too. I also used barge cement, but I decided to just glue mine without the lacing.

You ever shot anything with that 90# bow? That arrow must go clean through bone.

I get pass-thru's with a 50# bow.
