I put a fast flight on a bow without overlays, so far I can detect no damage.  I think if the bow has a good amout of width between the string grooves and the string is generously padded and grooves and string are clean, it can be worth the comfort and slightly added cast.  Where using the fast flight strings would make me nervous is bows with deep string grooves and delicate tips.  The Kramers that I have seen had enough material between the grooves, imo. It is not all that difficult to add a bit of overlay on the tips if there is a flat spot on the back glass, it just needs to be carefully melded with the existing groove, no edges, and it only needs to be up the center between the grooves to give structural support.

I had a conversation with Craig when I bought my Tembo from him. He told me it was safe to use FF on his bows. He sent me the bow with a 14 str. FF string on the bow.

I've peeked in on this post here and there. A while back K.S. Trapper posted one he built on the bowyers bench. I fell in love with it. It was modeled after a hill style boo backed osage.

I talked to Craig at hill archery today and got some info from him and I am gonna build me a 66" 50ish @29 boo, bloodwood, osage with osage and blood wood riser.

The thread has been going for over a year. Some of us were part of the Howard Hill Longbowman, that was an email listing that ended before this thread started.

Some of us have been shooting Hill bow's for several decades. It's nice for us Hill shooters to have our own place to go.

Sam-

This is from Craig Ekin to Dick Wrightman.

Hi Dick:
There are some general ones (rules) that will help out "most" people. There have been quite a few bowyers over the decades, but the most common are:

5 numbers without any letters or with just an R in front were made by John Schulz. The R stands for reverse handle.

There are a 'few' that have a Y for yew.

4 numbers followed by 3 numbers without any letters were made by Tim Meigs.....ie: 7077 134

2 letters or 3 letters where the last letter is K were made by Ted Kramer and/or his son, Lee. For example: BK is Big Five by Ted and Lee Kramer. BLK is Big Five
by Lee Kramer. BTK is Big Five by Ted Kramer. They worked together lots of the time in the same shop. Early on they did everything together. Later on, they worked
in the same shop but individually.

These letters are then followed by 4 or 5 numbers which are the length of the bow with the serial number of the bow.

And a bow with C in the beginning two or three letters was made here and stands for Craig.

Occasionally, someone would request something unique and that won't fit into this scheme, but this will take care of most of the bows from late 60's on.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you don't understand something or you have a question.

Ted Kramer built bows from 1977 to 1992. Call Craig he might be able to give you the exact year. Good looking bow.

Sam:

That is one of my old bows. Pretty decent shooter but I never cared for the grip as much as a standard straight grip.

Hope it serves you well.

Man, after reading all this about the new Hills I think I might have to order a blank.

What do ya'll think of a four lamination bow with alternating Juniper and Yew laminations (starting with a yew back and ending in a juniper belly) on a cocobolo riser? I would probably end up calling it the "Go and See" (Hill's life quote from Wild Adventure)

(PS first post on Trad Gang!)

Hey Casey.

Welcome to TG!   You picked a good place to start your journey.

To answer your question...whatever you think will look good is the best way to go.  Everybody has different likes and dislikes... and we are all right!

Ok I'm going pig huntin tomarrow true Hill style huntin with two feet on the ground that is. This will be the second time I've actually ground hunted pig game. The last time I stalked I did shoot a pig but that had more to do with the dumb pig just sitting there and not moving when i was 10 feet from him. Any pig huntin stalking tips?
