I guess that's what I get for hunting instead of monitoring the classifieds...lol

Plus perusing the classifieds just makes my Hill fever go up...lol

30coupe, I was going to say that the first thing I would do is get rid of all that stuff on the string!   "[dntthnk]"

I'm hoping, with the right arrows, I can go with a naked string. I like heavy arrows anyway, so that's one more plus to the Hill style bows as far as I'm concerned.

Whoohoo! I did it! I finally read through all 397 pages of this thread! Took me several days and      part of a couple nights, but it was worth it!

Now I can go to bed and dream about shooting my Northern Mist (Hill style) Shelton...soon I hope.

Goodnight all!

Hey 30coupe I'm glad you won that Shelton.  I had alerted a few folks about that sale.  Looks like a winner and it will shoot very smooth I'm sure.  You'll like the string follow.  As for the length you'll be fine.  I'm 5'5" and have shot Hill style Semi-Longbows from 64-70", though 64-66" is optimum for me.  66ers are definitely smoother on the draw.  Good luck with it.  Let us know how you like it.

And Mudd, you are DEFINITELY slipping.  That Sunset Hill was posted yesterday morning and it is a beaut.  If I hadn't had a new to me Pete George in the mail at the time of the posting I may have jumped on that one.  Right at my specs.  Maybe next time.

Good luck with "The Bone Collector" JCJ.

I most definitely missed the boat on that one Mike but don't feel too sorry for this old goat as Nate as begun the build on my very own Sunset Hill.

I was told by the master bowyer of these bows that buying one made for someone else wasn't bad but it couldn't be compared to one that was made specifically for you.

I think the bow fairy's were watching out for me on this one...lol

But what I want to know is, where are those little rascals when they are truly needed like when one isn't already sold...lol

Mudd -
I've wanted for weeks with money in my pocket for a certain bow to"appear" for sale. Invariably something rears its ugly head that I have to spend the $$ on (brakes for the truck, etc.) the very next day the very bow I was looking for magically appears in the classifieds. Such is life.      :(

Roy:

I am not a discerning enough shooter. I can't tell a whole lot of difference from one good bowyers Hill style bow to the next in terms of shooting.

To date I think David Millers bows might be my favorite but from a practical going afield and shooting a deer for the freezer standpoint they would all be just fine.

This Sunset Hill bow is a very nice bow too. It shoots really nice, It is also a very attractive bow.

I will be be sitting on the ground in my plaid wool with the "Bone Collector" in hand by 2 PM this afternoon in hopes of putting a doe in the freezer.

30coupe

Could some of you ground hunters maybe explain how you go about it? I've always been in the trees except for turkey hunting from my Hidden Hunter blind. I don't know if even the Hidden Hunter is tall enough for a 66" bow. Plus, I don't want to drag it through the snow. Since I didn't connect during the regular bow season, I'm going to have to try the late one. I don't think our snow will be leaving any time soon.

I probably should post this in the open Pow Wow, but I know lots of you "ground pounders" visit this thread daily or at least weekly.

I know the still hunter's mantra of walk little/look much. I tried that once this fall and did get within 15 yards of a doe and two fawns. Unfortunately, the wind assisted them and they smelled me before I saw them. The old doe turned around and came back to investigate and got within about 40 yards of me, but that's about 15 yards beyond my comfort zone. I also got within 10 yards of a bunch of turkeys, but I didn't know it until they took flight. Fun but it doesn't fill the freezer.   "[dntthnk]"

I'll post something in the Pow Wow too, so if you see this and would rather respond there, that would be cool!

Thanks!

Mike,

Glad the ones you alerted didn't want it as badly as I did! I got it for less than the buy it now price, including shipping, so I guess I did okay. It saved a couple hundred at least under a new one. I was tempted by a 66" 52 @ 28" Shelton Steve has in stock and might have bought it had I not won the used one.

I suppose Nate is probably right about the made to order bows being better, but the only one of those I have now is my Kanati. It does fit me well, but I had another that was made to order that didn't. As someone said, no two custom bows will be exactly alike. That being the case, even a made to order one may not be "the one." I've bought or traded for several bows. Some worked, some didn't. The ones that didn't fit became someone else's bow, sometimes their go-to bow. That's kind of the fun part. The only one I have now that really doesn't fit is the Badger. It's a nice bow, but it has those funny shaped limbs and I'm more of a straight limb guy I guess. I think I'll refinish it (the finish is kind of yellowing) and put it in the classifieds one of these days.

Anyhow, I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of my Shelton.

Since the re-surgence and start of this post theres 5 or 6 fellas,ya you know who you are, with your wealth of knowledge, that have probably done more to sell Howard Hill style bows than Howard Hill.I know my buddy Mudd has encouraged me to spend more money and have more fun than ever before.Posts from far off lands with exotic game wearing wide brimmed hats and breathtaking mountains in upper Idaho sure don't diminish the thrill we all feel and seek.KEEP 'ER GOING ! LOL

Well, there was a 68" 48# @ 28" (probably more like 51#+) string follow Big Five in the classifieds for from November 23 until yesterday. It sure took the sharks a long time to find that one! I had already bid on the Shelton by the time I found it (on page 2) or the sharks would have been out of luck.

I had sworn off bow shopping until this @#^%$*&! thread sucked me in.    :readit:

Thanks everyone! I've been looking for a while now and trying to coordinate W/ some local HH shooters to tryout before I buy.  Holidays are putting extra time so I'm trying to be good & not bid on a used one till I shoot some before hand.  But w/ a new job this Monday and hopefully some extra X-mas $ I'll probably take the HH plunge soon.
