OK I have no other choice but to show my ignorance.

I have no idea what NALS is, please educate me.

Mudd-

NALS is "North American Longbow Safari"

It's bad news for me that the shoot is over the 4th of July weekend, because I can't get those days off of work.  :(  The calender for next yesr is full for that weekend.

I would still prefer to do some hunting and stump shooting.  :)

The pics and the schedule-flyer of this years NALS in Calgary, AB give you an idea.

Well, for us Germans this is one of the 1001 things to do before you die. Must be an outstanding Trad event!!
At least we could let fly our broadheaded arrows legally....   :wavey:

Forgot some things, They put shooters in groups of 6-10 people and have a guide that leads you around the courses and gets everyone to the different shoots( long distance, bow birds) You shoot one side of the 3-d in the morning then in the afternoon you go shoot the bow birds, long distance . Then Sun am you shoot the other side and in the afternoon they have awards and drawings

GOOD rules - sparse, elegantly simple and to the "point" ...

"Longbows with traditional or reverse handles. The string must not touch limbs between nocks when strung. Bows with bolt-on limbs, center shot or elevated rests are NOT permitted. The minimum draw weight allowed is 40 lbs at the archer's draw length. Participants must be at least 12 years of age. Arrows must be constructed of wood shafting and natural feather fletching. 2 bladed broad heads should be used for the 3D shoot and running animal targets. Field / target points are required on all flu flu type arrows for the bow bird competition."

Thanks for enlightening me.

NALS sounds like a good time but the thought of getting a chance to hook with the men from Australia along with likes of Nate, Darren, Rik,Ray, and other tradgang members has more appeal for me.

These good people, who can shoot far better than me but as evidenced by their posts here are willing to share all of the secrets of getting it right, is far more attractive to me.

i'd love for a tghhg - trad gang howard hill gathering - meet and greet, show off gear and chat a bunch, do some stumping, get in some sight seeing and hopefully some kinda hunting if at all possible ... a week's worth of classic longbow camaraderie.  'course, it would definitely require attendance by the oz crew, and as many other folks from other shores as possible ... lotta logistics to consider, for sure!

You get our mates from Oz to come over here and I will do my best to make it to the shoot.  I've been to their wonderful country.  It's pretty amazing and I only had time to scratch the surface of northern Queensland.  Some wild stuff over there.  So, it's only fair that they come see our amazing land.  Let's get this thing going.

That sounds awesome for all of us getting together, my only issue is going to be getting the time off of work. As it is right now, all the summer months are booked and December.

It would be cool for us to meet together and break off into teams to hunt. With Rik and Nate being the team leaders since they have the most experience in the Idaho mountains. Have bow, arrows, GPS, and etc... just need to get the time off of work.

How many days would we want to spend? for example fly in on Thursday and leave Monday night. That would give us 3 full days of hunting.

Nate Steen .

Guys,  the NALS is in the traditional Idaho State Bowhunter Jamboree site this year.....

meaning, it's right next door to Rik and I.  In fact we spend quite some time around that area each spring... ;)

Here's a teaser of the area....

the boys in Canada that started the whole thing have done a great job along with the U.S. guys to keep the 'feeling' of a Mountain Man Rendezvous....lots of fun, shooting, cooking, etc...  Did I mention there's alot of room off the course to go stumpin'?  anyway, think about it, it'd be fun to get some TGrs together out there.

about hunting....that area is one of the ones decimated by wolves.  There are still some elk around, I saw more this year than in past years, but it's still 'hunting'.  I would suggest most of a week to have a chance for deer, bear, elk, and antelope, depending on your dates of stay.  counting travel time....you're looking at about 10 days or so....don't you think Rik?  It's not a hard area to hunt from campsites, and isn't too remote, and isn't as drastic an area as other parts of the state for vertical elevation hunting, but you still need time to acclimate to the elevation and be in shape.   I think it'd be cool for a contingent of Aussies to meet up with some 'real' longbow shooters out there.... :)

Nate-

If we were planning to hunt what months and dates would be best?

I for one was looking to just get together with some Hill fans to BS and stump shoot or 3D and trek around.  Something like that.  I hope some of you get a chance to hunt, but I'm gonna struggle just to get out there.  Pretty sure I wouldn't be able to lay out the cash for licenses and tags for hunting. Probably not the only one in this boat. That said I would LOVE to elk hunt. Maybe someday.

Let's keep talking, though.  This could make for an awesome get together.

And Nate thanks for the photo.  New Jersey is just a tad flatter than that.  Especially South Jersey where I'm from.  Those mountains look daunting when you live in a place where the tallest hill is approximately 200 feet above sea level.

mikebiz I'd be in the same boat in that I would love to get together with everyone and have some fun but I doubt that I'd be able to afford the trip and tags.

Kelly

Well, guys I'm planning on being there anyway. Just a matter if my bear tag is filled by then or not. Hope to see many of you then!

To those that are asking about bowhunting the area it is Unit 36 and the season runs from August 30 to September 30.

You guys can blame me for introducing that area to Nate and Rik, which is why they spend so much time there in the Spring  :bigsmyl:

i'd like to see it as more of a rendezvous than going to some shoot that can dilute the meeting.  mostly about meeting folks, lots of chatting, stump shooting whilst enjoying the views.  the hunt part can be optional?  yeah, lots of logistic and cost issues ...
IAM ~ The only government I trust is my .45-70 & my Ol' Brown Bess

I agree Rob.  I would prefer if this was our own TG Hill thing that isn't associated with another event.  With the economy who knows if any of us can pull this off, but I'm gonna dream like Mudd does.  At the least lets keep the dream alive.

The logistics are pretty hard core from here in Oz let me tell you .

Personally I am going to hunt elk ... not sure how nor where either But I am for sure going to do it ,

But ...

If there was another chance to informally meet up with you lads , stump shoot , rove and chew the fat for a few days , maybe take in some sight seeing in between roves , stumps and side betting... I am in .
I think I'd prefer that to any formal gathering , which as much fun as it sounds means in some ways I have even more logistics to consider .

I'll be following closely and appreciate any input .
